Kathryn “Kay” Morehead, 96, Fargo, ND passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at Eventide, Fargo.
Kay was born October 7, 1925 in Glencross, SD to Joseph and Maria Eva (Bernhardt) Schweitzer. She moved with her family to Berlin, ND where she graduated from High School in 1942. She attended telegraph school in Jamestown after which she became a depot agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad where she met her future husband, Mel Luiten. They were married on May 16, 1949 in Berlin, ND. They made their home in Sykeston, ND before later moving to New Rockford, ND. She also worked at City Hospital and Phillips 66 Café as well as teaching religion classes at St. John’s Catholic Church all in New Rockford. When they retired, they moved to Fargo in 1986. Mel passed away on May 4, 1989.
Kay continued to live in Fargo where she met and later married Charles Morehead on October 2, 1993. They made their home in Fargo, ND. She was a long-time member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Fargo. She was devout in her faith and prayed endlessly for her family and friends. One of the causes she was passionate about was the Pro-Life Movement and she helped in many ways to further the respect for each and every life from conception to death. She enjoyed traveling throughout her life and always loved to fish and play cards at every opportunity.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Morehead, Fargo, ND; children, Maureen (John) Anderson, Walhalla, ND, Father Gary Luiten, West Fargo, ND; 7 grandchildren, Eva (Bill Carpenter) Anderson, Mohave Valley, AZ, Natalie Anderson, Moorhead, MN, Bryan (Stephanie) Anderson, Walhalla, ND, Colton Anderson, Emerado, ND, Keith Anderson, Hillsboro, ND, Veronica Anderson, Moosic Heights, PA, Dunnevan Anderson, Bismarck, ND; 11 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Noah, William, Carter, Olivia, Briah, Shealyn, Brynlee, Quinn, Colton and Bryten; sister, Loretta Leonard, Mobridge, SD and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Mel; infant children, Joseph and Gerard Luiten; grandson, Johnny Anderson; siblings, Frank Schweitzer, Betty Warfield, Joseph Schweitzer, Tony Schweitzer, Jake Schweitzer, Ann Marie Baumgartner, Balzer Schweitzer and Leander Schweitzer.

Dear Father Luiten,
I send my sincere condolences and prayers for the loss of your Mother, Kathryn. May she rest in peace.
I will not be able to attend on Friday, or the funeral on Saturday, as I was exposed to Covid Thanksgiving Day. Please know that even though I only met Kay on a few occasions, she made a lasting impression on me. Her kindness and faith in her Church was very evident in her lovely demeanor and smile. I will say the same thing that Fr. Gary said to me on the passing of my daughter Jada. May Kay soar with the Angels and rejoice in Heaven.
Fr. Gary, Chuck and family. So sorry. Your mom was such an outstanding example of someone completely devoted to others. Will never forget the times I visited your home and all the goods times we had together. Was so honored that I got to play the organ at your mom and Chuck’s wedding at St. Anthony’s. Hoping I can stop in West Fargo soon to see you. We can spend some time together honoring your mother.

Occasionally during life, if you are truly blessed, you meet someone who defines the word “unforgettable”. I think that word came to be very shortly after God created Kay. She is definitely unforgettable! I will always remember her joy, her interest in others and her faith-fullness. I believe Heaven has become a bit more lively since she arrived. May God surround her in His glory!

Fr Gary – – My sincere sympathy on the death of your Mom. My son, Brad Schmidt shared the news. Reading her obituary, she was blessed with a long life, definitely well lived. Had the pleasure of meeting her at a church event with Brad and Sue a few years ago. Had such a good visit – Interesting to learn that her sister Loretta was a friend of my very best friend Madge (Reis) Leier – they were life-long friends after meeting while attending school at convent, Hankinson. . Schweitzer name was also interesting – my cousin Edith was married to a Tony Schweitzer, Bismarck, skilled carpenter. Didn’t talk long enough to learn if this Tony was her brother. In meeting your Mom, it was obvious that she was awarm-hearted, friendly person, May her soul Rest In Peace. Mrs. Joe (Lenora Schmidt). Glasser
Kay, an energetic and generous woman who enjoyed having fun, but also stood courageously in defense of what she knew to be right. Her actions, prayers and support of the unborn were unwavering as was her generosity and support of those fighting to protect them.
May she rest in peace and enjoy her reward, for she was a servant indeed.
I am very sorry to her about her passing. I lived in the same apartment building. She was my neighbor before I moved last May. She would make foods for me to try or come to borrow some sugar. She was always stopping by for a visit to see if I have a “Good Catholic Boyfriend” as she always said that if you don’t find a “Good Catholic man”, I will not have a good relationship with God. From time to time I would go and watch Charles while Kay went out with her son Pastor Gary to the casino. She will be missed.

Father, you presided at my mother’s funeral nine years ago now. Her name was Beatrice Karnik. The funeral was at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Veseleyville. Thank you. You are terrific.
