Mary Selina (Lund) Walaker, Fargo, ND passed away peacefully, at Farmstead Care in Moorhead MN, on Nov. 10, 2017. Mary was born in Twin Valley, MN on March 18, 1941 to Oscar and Margaret (Houkum) Lund. She grew up in Twin Valley and graduated from Twin Valley High school in 1959. After graduation Mary went to Moorhead State University and graduated with a degree in elementary education. In May of 2000, she received her master’s degree in elementary education from Minot State University. She began her teaching career in Pelican Rapids, MN. While living there she met her husband, Dennis Walaker. Dennis and Mary were married, May 26, 1966. They started their married life together by moving to Moorhead, MN. To be closer to Mary’s next teaching job they moved briefly to West Fargo, ND. Mary taught at South Elementary where her passion for education and the arts flourished. For 39 years Mary wrote school musicals, supervised science fairs, championed student learning, and developed lifelong friendships. Mary and Dennis lived only briefly in West Fargo when a near miss with a devastating flood convinced them to move to south Fargo, where they would welcome their first daughter Erin. In preparation for their second daughter, Shannon, they built their forever home, three blocks south. Throughout her entire life Mary was passionate about music, education, gardening and her family. She was active in the Concordia Marimba group “Viva Marimba” where she developed news friendships and shared her love for music. She was an active supporter of the FM Symphony and the arts community. She loved to take trips to view the area nurseries which gave her inspiration for her gardening. Her grandsons, Sam and Max, were her pride and joy. Whether shuttling them to activities, pitching baseballs in the backyard, or baking cookies, Mary’s love for them was evident. She was able to spend many hours with them in her retirement taking them on wonderful adventures and exposing them to many new experiences. Mary is survived by; her daughters Shannon Walaker, St. Petersburg, FL., Erin (Walaker) Hall (Thomas), her grandchildren Samuel Hall and Maxwell Hall, (Fargo, ND), her sister-in-law Renae (Walaker) Wenner (Scott) New Canaan, CT, her nephew Christopher (Whitney) Wenner their three children, Hudson, Cameron, and Carson, Atlanta, GA, her niece and goddaughter Kate (Jared) Carey Haddon Heights, NJ, their daughter, Taylor. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Dennis R. Walaker in 2014. We are grateful for the assistance provided by Hospice of the Red River Valley at the end of Mary’s life. Also, her family cannot thank the wonderful staff of Farmstead Care enough. They were there to laugh, hug, and care for her in her last year. A celebration of her life will be held at Boulger Funeral Home with visitation on Monday, November 13th, from 5 – 7 p.m. followed by a short prayer service. Guestbook

  1. She is now in heaven with her devoted, wonderful husband, Dennis. I send my thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy to Renae and all the members of Mary’s family.

  2. Shannon, Erin and family,
We were saddened to hear of the loss of your mom… Mary and Denny were wonderful people with hearts of gold for their friends. Let your hearts rejoice that they are together again. The Walaker family is in our thoughts and prayers. God’s speed as you travel this new journey,
    Fondly, Roger and Nancy Gress

  3. My sincere condolences to Mary’s family. Mary was a ‘stellar’ member of our Twin Valley High School Class of ’59. Good to the core…..a kind, talented, disciplined and generous person.

  4. I will miss my good friend and am very sorry not to be at the funeral service. I am however happy to have spent extra time with her before we left for AZ Oct. 15th. After she was done eating I played many many songs on her piano for her and she hummed along with some. As I left I pushed her over to her activity group and leaned over and hugged her. She looked up at me and said are you trying to crack my head. The activity lady laughed so hard. I am happy that is the last moment I have of your special Mother.
    May God rest her soul.

  5. With my deepest sympathies to Erin and Shannon for the passing of your mother.

  6. I was very sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. She and your whole family were such special friends of ours in Fargo. We made many trips across the street visiting. Dennis and Mary were wonderful people.
You are both in my prayers.
    Nancy (Renhowe) Otteman

  7. Our condolences to Mary’s family. She was my, (Lyle’s), classmate starting with 6th grade in a one room country school building moved into Twin Valley pending competition of the new addition. I’ll always remember Mary as a compassionate, learned role model who had a great love of music.

  8. Mrs. Walaker was our daughter’s elementary teacher for two years as one of a few West Fargo teachers who “looped” with their students, following them on to their next grade level. She was a wonderful teacher and mentor, still giving our daughter sage advice whenever she ran into her around town even after college. Mary was one of the reasons why my daughter decided to pursue a teaching career of her own. Mary was a wonderful person and a lifetime friend to so many people.

  9. Shannon and your extended Walaker family. Our deepest sympathy to you during this time. We will keep you in our prayers. Cookie and Jim Ebsen

  10. Was so sad to hear of Mary’s passing. I have many good memories of the Walaker’s house growing up across the steeet. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Erin and Shannon.
    Lisa (Renhowe) Ruthven

  11. Shannon and Erin, heartfelt condolences from our family to yours. Those were good years as neighbors on 19th St. We felt your loss sharply when your Dad passed away and are greatly saddened again now to hear of your Mom’s passing. May your happy memories and the love of those who surround you bring you comfort and peace.

  12. To Mary’s girls and family we send our love and sympathy. May she rest in peace and be reunited with Denny.

  13. Mary and Dennis were the kindest neighbors and taught me in my young growing-up years the value of kindness in the community. I always felt welcome in their home. Shannon and Erin, prayers and sympathies to you as you remember your wonderful mother.

  14. Mary was a HS classmate and a friend of ours. We have many wonderful memories from making pizza from scratch (long before that was popular!) to band, orchestra, choir. She was smart, likeable, fun to be around and just simply a good person and friend. My sympathy to the family. May you be surrounded by Gods love, comfort and peace.
