Norman H. Bergh

Norman Harold Bergh died on June 15, 2021, just shy of his 98th birthday. Born in Minneapolis on July 25, 1923, he studied engineering at the U of M and met his future wife, Florence Margaret Berntsen, at the Bros Boiler Company, where they both worked. He said that when he first laid eyes on her, he spun on his heels and headed in her direction. A handsome couple, they married in 1948 and soon moved to Moorhead, where they raised four children—Susan, Sandra, Terry, and Jeffrey—and taught them values based on decency and common sense that guide them even today.

Norm built and never tired of improving the house where the kids grew up and he died, still puttering. He spent his career as Honeywell’s regional branch manager, turning down several opportunities to transfer elsewhere because he preferred work and family life in the area. Stubborn and a stickler for details, he probably deserved the “Stormin’ Norman” moniker he earned from his staff. As a young man, he and a few lifelong friends taught dancing on the weekends, and in their spare time he and Flo could cut a rug with the Lindy when they weren’t playing bridge. He was often found on the golf course, coming out of nowhere to win the 51st All-City Golf Tournament. “I just got lucky,” he said. He also loved Flo’s spaghetti sauce and chow mein, smooth crooners, many sports, and not spending money.

He outlasted everyone but his children, who still hear him whistling as he worked; four granddaughters, who looked forward to his babysitting forays, not always for the right reasons; two great-grandchildren, who lost him far too soon; and several nieces and nephews. Not liking fuss, he frowned on services and none are planned, except around the table in the kitchen he built. We love and miss you with all our hearts, Dad. Thanks for everything.

Norm’s parents were Christoffer and Elise (Skjak), both immigrants from Norway. His siblings were Thorolf, Trygve, Helene (Goetten), and Karen (Marten), his twin sister. His granddaughters are Sunny (Holmes) and Olivia, and Marissa and Hannah. His great-grandchildren are Lily and Parker (both Holmes).

  1. Our Condolences to the Family of Norm Bergh:
Norm was a leader and mentor to me. He hired me at Honeywell
In 1973, and I stayed there until my retirement in 2005. I remember
Trying to decode his famous page margin notes while Engineering from his
Sales take-off documents. Thanks to Norm, we all had a Masters Class in
    Business.
