Ed passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family.
Edward E. Schmitz was born on April 19, 1943, in Harvey, ND, the son of Norbert and Rose (Keller) Schmitz. He grew up on a farm near Harvey, where he farmed with his family and received his education, graduating from Harvey High School. Ed furthered his education at Minot State College, where he met his sweetheart and love of his life, Bonnie Bondly. Upon graduation Ed taught and coached in Genora, ND before proudly serving his country in the North Dakota Army Reserves. Ed and Bonnie were married on July 29, 1967, recently celebrating their 59th Anniversary.
They moved to Stanley and then Forman, ND where Ed was a teacher and a coach before moving to Fargo where Ed was graduated with a Masters of Education program at North Dakota State University in 1971. He enjoyed being an assistant wrestling coach at NDSU and continued to be involved in the program running the Bison Open for many years. After graduation Ed Worked in Financial, Estate, and Insurance planning before founding Ed Schmitz and Associates in 1988. He loved working with his clients in helping them with their Financial and Estate planning goals, becoming true friends with many of his clients.
Ed enjoyed camping with his family and spending many fun filled weekends at their lake cabin. He loved to travel and make memories with his wife and family. He also enjoyed dancing, chasing around his grandkids, spending any time he could with family, and laughing.
He also enjoyed volunteering his time to help the community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Fargo Chamber of Commerce including helping them merge into the Fargo-Moorhead Chamber. He volunteered with many other organizations but is most proud of his time with Real Presence Radio. My condolences to each of you as you mourn the passing of your beloved husband and father. I have so many wonderful memories of Ed, including our wild water fights on Elm Street. Ed was a great neighbor and friend. I know you will miss him dearly.
Sending you love,
Mary Tuchscherer
Bonnie and family,
Our hearts and prayers go out to you today. We are so very sorry for your loss. It’s hard to lose someone so close and precious but God has a plan for all of us. Edward was a faithful follower. We know he’s with the Lord. Dennis would love to come but he just got out of the hospital.
He loved Ed…says he was his favorite cousin.

My heart aches for your loss. Bonnie , hugs to you! Always enjoyed Ed , smiling and welcoming always .
I am forever grateful for the gift of Ed Schmitz and his “yes” to a mission of spreading the word of God through the airwaves. As one of the many who was impacted by Real Presence Radio being brought to Fargo (and all over), I will always consider Ed as part of what facilitated my deeper encounter with Christ. I am also thankful for Ed’s family (as we know he spent many hours on the road building the mission). I am so sorry for your loss, and I have confidence that Ed is now, through the mercy of God, resting in peace.
My deepest condolences on Ed’s passing. Such a shock to me. Just yesterday as I drove to Fargo I was thinking very fondly of Ed and that I needed a catch up with him. We hadn’t remained in touch well after I lost my dad.
I live in Phoenix.
I am the daughter of Bob & Sally Artz and a dear friend of Math & Lynn Prom.
Ed always being a treasured friend to Bob, was tremendously appreciated and loved. And he was a great support to me as well. When in Fargo, I often met up with he, Bob, and sometimes Math at Friday morning breakfast after Mass.
His deep faith and tender love of you Bonnie (his bride, as he so often referred to you) and the family has left a lasting impression on me.
May God bring you all comfort and healing through precious memories at this difficult time, and in knowing that Ed certainly rests in Christ’s peace 🙏
Surely he’s been given the words “Well done my good and faithful Son” ✝️
