Allen Borseth

Allen Borseth, 85, passed away September 2, 2010 at the V.A. Hospital, Fargo under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Allen L.R. Borseth was born on June 7, 1925 to Ole and Lottie (Erickson) Borseth at Comstock, Minnesota. He grew up in Comstock and attended schools in Comstock and Moorhead, Minnesota. Allen was offered a deferment to serve in the Seattle shipyards but chose to enlist in the Navy in 1943 and served in the Armed Forces until the end of World War II. After being discharged from the Navy, he became a carpenter, serving his apprenticeship in Fargo.
Allen Borseth and Ruth Dahl were married on May 20, 1947 in West Fargo at Faith Lutheran Church. They lived in Seattle for a short time while he worked at Boeing Aircraft. Allen and Ruth returned to Fargo where he built his family's first home. He built two additional homes plus his family's lake home. Over the years he worked for the Jackson Company, Martin Dahl Construction, and Allan Schober Construction. Allen retired in 1987.
Allen is survived by his wife, Ruth; his 7 children, Yvonne (Terry) Erickson, Greenbush, MN, Janice (Mike) Simpson, Columbia City, OR, Karen Marcinko, Phoenix, AZ, David Borseth, Mapleton, ND, Kevin Borseth, West Fargo, ND, Randy Borseth, Sioux Falls, SD, and Brian Borseth, Fargo; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 1 stepbrother, Howard Gitlestad. He is preceded in death by his father, Ole, his mother, Lottie, his stepfather, Abe Gitlestad; sisters, Hazel, Laura, Ruth, Eunice, and Frances, and brother, Roy.

My Dad was a proud man, as well as he should have been, he accomplished so much in his life. Dad started working for a living after the seventh grade, passed up safety and better pay to serve his country in WW II, built all his homes and lake cabin without a single mortgage while raising us 7 kids at the same time. But MOST of all Dad taught us how important FAMILY is, to cherish every moment, to work hard and hold yor head high. Dad I miss you VERY VERY much and am very greatful for all that you have done for all of us. And I am VERY PROUD to call you my DAD. I will always love you dad and will NEVER forget you.
Medford OregonRuth, so sorry you lost your love and partner of so many years. I feel like you’ve been a friend since we’ve loved your daughter, Jan, for 30 years. Was so great for me to visit with you ‘n Fran at Geoff’s wedding, so far away. The video tribute was simply a wonderful treasure to see–the music great, and it was like just watching your life enfold over the years. May God bless you now, in your new life, new apartment, and if you ask God, he will comfort you and provide for you totally and completely–both now, and if He’s in your heart–also into eternity when you go be with your Al and God Himself, for good! Such a beautiful prayer service tonight, with all the talks and tributes said. All I could even add to that is, I always knew Al was very proud of his family. I will never forget the bright lights that were on when he was taking home movies of all of us cousins at Grandma Dahl’s house at Christmas. It always seem you could always find something to visit with him about and if you didn’t have anything to say, he would be the first one to strike up a conversation. Al was a wonderful uncle and I know he will be missed by many. Love you all.
Castle Rock ColoradoI have many fond memories of trips to the lake cabin and trips to Moorhead to visit Grandma and Grandpa. I have always enjoyed the time I’ve spent with you Grandpa! I will cherish those memories for the rest of my life. You raised a wonderful family who are always there for one another in times of need. We will all get through this because of that close family bond we all have. I will miss your sense of humor and your kind smile.
We will all miss you very much Grandpa! I remember how you loved to dance, loved music, really loved to videotape everything, enjoyed telling stories and had a great sense of humor. I remember the time you helped me move out to Oregon and even though you were probably ready to put me and Grandma on a bus you kept your patience and were very helpful! You have taught us all the value of hard work and even though at the time we thought you got a bit carried away with the video camera…you were right, we now all do appreciate that you saved your memories on tape for all of us to enjoy now that you are gone. We love you and miss you but know that you are now at peace and watching over all of us.

I always thought of Allen as a quiet and soft spoken man, until my son Brian and I ran into him and Yvonne at the DQ a few months back, while everyone else in the family were vacationing. He told me stories of when he worked for my grandma at the barn dances in Sabin, which I did not even know he worked for her. He said how she had bought the farm and so many acres and was able to pay it off in 2 years with the money she brought in from the barn dances. That was very interesting and then he also commented on what a good mechanic my dad was. He seemed to really enjoy talking and telling stories about my relatives that he knew, which I am assuming he must have done with most people he knew. He seemed to be very talkative that evening and Yvonne had a hard time getting him to leave. I really enjoyed visiting with him and Yvonne that evening, was nice to hear stories of my family. I am sure he will certainly be missed by family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Remember the good memories and God will give you the strength to carry on.
