Obituary

Bernard H. ?Barney? Gaugler, age 84, West Fargo, ND, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND with family present.

Barney was born July 21, 1918 in Barnesville, MN. He grew up and attended school in Kindred, ND. Later he moved to Redwood City, CA working there until he entered the Army in 1941.

Barney was a World War II veteran from March 1941 until July 1945. As a company with the 756th Tank Battalion, he participated in amphibian landings in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Salerno and Anzio, France, and across the Rhine into Germany. Heavily engaged throughout the war, including Kasserine Pass, Cassino, and the Calmar pocket, Barney survived the loss of six different tanks. He was with the first combat unit in Rome. He was awarded numerous decorations, including two purple hearts, two silver stars, bronze star, and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. Barney was a proud member of the VFW Post 7564 in West Fargo.

After the war he returned to North Dakota and married Lucille B. Meyer at Hillsboro, ND on September 8, 1945. They made their home in Fargo, ND. He worked for Nodak Supply when it was first organized. Later he was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company where he retired after 30 years.

He was active in his love for horses being a member of the F.M. Posse and the Badlands Trail Riders. His family competed in many horse shows in the area for years.

He enjoyed hunting and looked forward to the sport every year. Much time was spent enjoying his family on Lake Melissa and Lake Eunice.

He was a charter member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fargo and St. Andrew Lutheran Church, West Fargo.

Barney is survived by his wife, Lucille and seven children, Gloria Willis, Ft. Collins, CO, Gary (Mary), Phoenix, AZ, Randy (Cheryl), North Brunswich, NJ, David (Janel), Wishek, ND, Janice (Gary) Hanson, West Fargo, ND, Mary Ann (Paul) Evitt, Corydon, Iowa, Dean (Debbie), Buffalo, MN; and thirteen grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Pearl Gaugler, and two brothers, Raymond and Lowell.

There will be visitation Wednesday, January 8, 2003 from 5-7 p.m. in Boulger Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday, January 9, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. in the church. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Andrew Lutheran Church, West Fargo, ND. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2003 in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
