Bertha Lindgren

Bertha passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo at the age of 96. Bertha Elise Buringrud was born on November 12, 1919, the daughter of Nels O. and Martha (Begret) Buringrud, in rural Thief River Falls, MN. She was baptized in the Silverton Lutheran Church and attended the Banner School in rural Thief River Falls. She moved with her family to the Sutton Farm near Hillsboro, ND and there attended grade school. Bertha was confirmed in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Luther League and Dorcas Society. After graduating from Hillsboro High School she was employed in the office of Tiegland Sign Company in Fargo. She met the love of her life, Halger, on a double date and that led to their marriage on June 30, 1940 by Reverend A.J. Tjornham in their parsonage. They moved to their farm in Herberg Township, Traill County where they farmed and raised their family until retirement. Bertha was an active member of the Ladies Aid and Circles of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Herberg Homemakers Club, Order of the Eastern Star and the golf club. As a 4-H Leader, she also excelled in sharing her sewing abilities, learned from her mother, with many 4-H youth. Halger and Bertha enjoyed entertaining friends and family and in the summertime (when time from farming allowed) there would be a few days spent at the lakes and on scenic trips. There was always time for sporting events, fairs and community functions. Halger and Bertha spent part of their winter months in Palm Springs for 12 years and the later years in Scottsdale, AZ with their daughter, husband, and family enjoying the gatherings of relatives and friends and golfing. In 1980 they retired from farming and moved to Fargo where they became members of Olivet Lutheran Church. Bertha was a temporary salesperson for 18 years in several different children’s stores. Bertha’s time was always filled with caring for the family. Sewing for home and family, cooking and baking, gardening – especially the roses – and when time allotted there was always the interest in art, painting and sculpting. Bertha is survived by her children – Gary Lindgren of Fargo; Kathryn (Meredith) Schultz of Fargo; Sue Carole (Thomas) Brennan of Scottsdale, AZ and Larry (Patty) Lindgren of Fargo; - 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. Also surviving are her brothers – Nels Buringrud and Einar Buringrud both of Fargo; sisters-in-law, Ruth Barrett of La Jolla, CA; Vivian Thompson of LaMirada, CA; and Jean Lindgren of Fargo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Halger in 2009; her parents; her sister, Sigrid Grable; and her brothers – Olaus, Edwin, and Alfred Buringrud; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
