Bruce Moen
April 11, 1937 ~ April 30, 2014
Bruce passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Hillsboro Medical Center at the age of 77.
Bruce Arthur Moen, Hillsboro, was born April 11, 1937 in Grand Forks, ND to Arthur & Laura Moen.
In 1959, he married Sandra Berg and together they had three children. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1961 from UND and then moved to Hillsboro where he started teaching in the fall.
He taught high school mathematics at Hillsboro High School for 37 years until he retired in 1998, a year after having heart bypass surgery.
Survivors are his wife, Sandra; son, David, Mayville, ND; daughter and son-in-law Kim and Todd Volden, Rathdrum, ID; daughter and son-in-law Linda and Ridge Fatland, Moorhead, MN; granddaughter Katie and Chris Woodcock (& great grandsons Benjamin & Carter), Clarksville, TN; grandson Lucas and Elissa Fatland (& great granddaughter Zo¸), Moorhead, MN; grandson Matt Volden, Monroe, WA; and granddaughter Keisa Fatland, Moorhead, MN; and brother Grant Moen, Poulsbo, WA.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, Arthur and Laura Moen, and in-laws Julian and Helene Berg.
Bruce’s family was very important to him and he enjoyed any opportunity he had to spend time with them. He also spent many, many hours golfing whenever and wherever he could, fishing and spending time at the lake, reading, and completing the daily crossword puzzle.

Bruce was one of the “good old guys” who taught at HHS. I always loved his classes and particularly loved the conversations we had that weren’t at all mathematical in nature! My sympathies to all the family. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

So sorry to hear of Bruce’s passing. I was scared of him when I was a student and I was not a good math student. If I had known in high school, what a cut up he was, I would not have been afraid to ask for help in math. He was always so serious. As a colleague, he was always so supportive of me and fun to be around. I will cherish the 14 years I spent working along side him as a counselor at Hillsboro. He was such a caring man and loved what he did. More importantly, he loved kids and they knew it.

Algona IowaI am saddened to hear of Mr. Moen’s passing. He was by far my favorite teacher, and gave me a solid foundation of math that helped me in my Engineering career. He even created an advanced class for just myself and one other student to help prepare us for college. He was truly a great man!

Many of my favorite high school memories are about Math classes with ‘Mr. Moen’. He was one of my favorite teachers and inspired me to become a math & computer teacher.
I often tell my students stories of our first computer class (no monitor and dialing the phone to get online!)

Sandra, our thoughts are with you and your family over Bruce’s death. I always enjoyed visiting with Bruce. My husband and both kids had him as a teacher and they spoke very highly of him. He will be missed by many.
Hillsboro I worked with Bruce for a few years at the High School, we had a lot of fun. He had alot of stories about the years of 1960’s we laughed alot. Bruce would eat liver wurst and I love it also, so when he brought a sandwich to school to eat I had to go buy some and have it the next day at school for lunch. Bruce was a great guy and I don’t think that there was any student that didn’t like him. He was the best math teach. Take care. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Bruce will be greatly missed. Bruce was older than me but I remember the family. Art and Laura were good friend with my parents. My folks were Phil and Lill Uglem.
I remember that Art and Laura were such nice people and they loved and were so proud of their sons.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Moen’s death (I can’t call him “Bruce.” The deep respect I have for him will always keep him as Mr. Moen in my mind). Math was never my strong suit, yet he had sooo much patience with me and made those deadly word problems actually make sense. He was an excellent teacher. I remember when he broke ?His leg? ankle? Anyway, he had to teach via a wheel chair and an overhead projector. He didn’t miss a beat and continued to give us an excellent education. Some of the students were, well, a bit rowdy, yet he seemed to have a quiet, yet thoughtful way of settling even the most rambunctious down. That’s a gift! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Omaha NeMr. Moen was such a great teacher in a subject that challenged me. He made math make sense. I admire his approach and wisdom.

I know he has been through some really tough times over the past few years battling his illness, and I am so sorry you and he had to endure so much suffering. I think I am not alone when I say that we have lost a great teacher, mentor, and friend that many of us Burro alumni will never forget. He was truly one of the finest men I have ever known.
