Catherine Frances (Dooley) McMaines died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family, and assisted by Hospice at the age of 88 on June 27th, 2016. She lived in Fargo most of her adult life where she and her husband Lee raised 5 children. Catherine Dooley was born March 22, 1928 to Frank and Julia (Kensok) Dooley on the family farm near Windsor, ND where she grew up and attended school. Her family moved to Casselton, ND area when Catherine was in high school and she graduated from High School in 1946. She then attended Fargo Business School and was employed at Griggs Cooper wholesale company for 5 years. Catherine also worked for Sears in her later years for 15 years. On November 17, 1951 she married Lee McMaines and they made their home in Fargo where they gave birth to 6 children, with one dying in childbirth. After retirement they spent winters traveling to Florida and Arizona. They also enjoyed 10 years on Tamarac Lake before moving back to Fargo. Catherine enjoyed camping, baking, sewing, gardening and spending time with family. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith. She was active in Circle and Foresters, St Mary’s court #148 as a member of Holy Spirit and St. Anthony of Padua churches. She also was a campfire leader, and a life member of the DAV auxiliary. Catherine is survived by her children: Michael McMaines, Fargo; Jeffrey (Terry) McMaines, East Grand Forks; Judith (Greg) Peterson, Fargo; James (Jasel) McMaines, Fargo; and Mary Zander, Fargo. Grandchildren: David McMaines, Fargo, Ryan McMaines, Fargo, Mackenzie (Matt) McMaines, East Grand Forks; Anne (Lucas) Stram, Moorhead; Laura (Chris) Carlson, East Grand Forks; James McMaines II, Philippines; Nathan Zander, St. Cloud; Michael, Tyler, Dylan Colling,Fargo; Catherine was awaiting the birth of a granddaughter in October whose name will be Catherine Leigh McMaines, to proudly carry on the legacy of her grandparents. Great Grandchildren: Daij and Darion Hall, East Grand Forks; Oliver, Amelia and Eden Stram, Moorhead; Carter, Quinn and Sylas Carlson, East Grand Forks; Sister in Law’s: Marie Dooley, Casselton and Theresa Dooley, Wheatland, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lee McMaines, son David McMaines, parents: Frank and Julia Dooley, siblings James Dooley, sister Margaret and brother in-law Clarence Baumler, brother Eugene Dooley, sister Rolandis McComb. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Holy Spirit Catholic Church or The Salvation Army.

  1. Catherine was such a sweet and kind person. I’ve been doing her hair for a few years now and I always marveled at her attitude. She was never crabby. She made me feel good any time I was around her. I had no idea she would be gone so soon. Last Friday she seemed really good! She had an appointment for the day of her funeral. I will miss her!
