Cathryn Marie Jostad, 64, Kindred, ND passed away on Friday, October 2, 2015 at Essentia Health in Fargo, following a school bus accident near Kindred. She was born on October 5, 1950 to Ernest and Ella (Fjelstad) Gronbeck in Fargo, ND. Cathy grew up in rural Leonard and graduated from Leonard High School in 1968. She then graduated from NDSU earning a degree in Secondary Education/History. On June 6, 1970 she was united in marriage to Robert Jostad at Norman Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Grand Forks briefly before returning to the Kindred area, settling on the Jostad family farm where they made their home and raised their two daughters. Cathy taught briefly at the Kindred Schools then stayed at home to raise her daughters. As her children got older, she began her bus driving career of 30 years. Cathy was a lifelong horse enthusiast and was active in 4H for many years. She raised and showed Arabian horses. She was an active member of the North Dakota Arabian Horse Association and FM Mounted Posse. In most recent years, Cathy was active in the North Dakota and Minnesota Pinto Horse Association. Cathy showed horses with her family all around the region and country, winning multiple national and world titles. One of her greatest joys was sharing her passion for horses with her grandchildren, Brooke and Zac. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bob; daughters, Lisa Jostad, Kindred; Laura Schwab, West Fargo; sister, Sheila (Larry) Goughnour, Fargo; grandchildren, Zac and Brooke Schwab; and her best friend, Chaun Merkens, Kindred. She was preceded in death by her parents.

  8. Ron and I are so deeply saddened at the loss of this kind lady. Words cannot express what a gentle woman, a horsewoman with the highest regard for both her equines AND her fellow competitors, and what a fine and kind soul she was!
    Cathy now knows, feels and sees the love of her community and from her horse family. She knows we all hold her memory, her smile, and her giggles close to our hearts. She knows all the majesty of an eternity of happiness. Imagine the ponies she already has hooked up and driven, how exciting to always be driving in a victory pass with Him cheering her on!

  19. This is such a shock and so sad, my heart hurts for her family and her friend Chaun. We have shown horses with this family for several years and the thought of Cathy not being there is very hard to think about. The world just lost an amazing person that made a difference in those around her. I am very blessed to have known you Cathy, I will miss you.

Bob, words cannot express our sympathies at this terrible time for you, Ron would have been at the funeral but I fractured my neck and have to wear a neck brace till 12 – 19, I wish we would do something for you like fix a meal but that won’t be happening either at this time. We know Shelia and Larry Goughnour since Larry is a second cousin to Ron and we know Chaun since she drove bus when we did. Small world sometimes. Sending our sympathies and love!
