D. Stuart Frear Donald Stuart Frear, 80, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010 in his home under the care of his family and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Stuart was born on September 5, 1929, in Wakefield, Rhode Island to Donald E. H. Frear and Hazel (Eaton) Frear. He grew up in State College, PA and graduated from high school in 1947. He continued his education at the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biological Chemistry in 1951. He obtained masters and doctorate degrees in Agricultural Biochemistry from The Ohio State University in 1953 and 1955 respectively. Stuart married Clotine Rose, January 14, 1956 in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was employed as a Research Biochemist at the Charles F. Kettering Foundation in Yellow Springs, Ohio and was also Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Antioch College. In September 1957, Stuart and Clotine moved to Fargo where he was Associate Professor of Biochemistry at North Dakota State University until 1964 when he moved to the newly established USDA Metabolism and Radiation Research Laboratory on the NDSU campus. He was the author of many publications and papers with many awards and honors. In 1982 he was given a Superior Service and Commendation Award by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Agrochemical Division of the American Chemical Society awarded him the Burdick and Jackson International Award for research in Pesticide Chemistry in August of 1992. He was honored in 1995 as an outstanding alumnus by the College of Agriculture Science of his beloved Penn State. He was always a loyal and devoted fan of the Blue and White Nittany Lions. Stuart retired in January 1997 as Research Leader of Plant Sciences at the newly named USDA Biosciences Research Lab at NDSU. He was an active member of Gethsemane Cathedral and the Diocese of the Episcopal Church of North Dakota. Stuart was preceded in death by his parents, Donald E. H. Frear and Hazel W. Frear and his brother Scott Eaton Frear. He is survived by his wife Clotine; his children Dawnelle (Douglas) Ax of Lewiston, Idaho, Susan Frear and Michele Frear of Euless, TX and Craig Stuart Frear of Pullman, WA; his sister Joann (Harry) Falk (Sarasota, FL); and four grandchildren, Brian Douglas Ax (Robins AFB, GA), Derek Stuart Ax (Moscow, ID), Carle’ Rose Ax (Dover, DE) and Marisa Clotine Frear (Euless, TX). A “Celebration of Life” memorial service will be held at Gethsemane Cathedral on Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 at 2:00pm. Interment will be in the Gethsemane Cathedral Columbarium. Donations in his honor may be made to Gethsemane Cathedral or Hospice of the Red River Valley. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo.
