David Hawkinson

david hawkinson

David Dean Hawkinson was born on July 16, 1963 in Fargo, ND the son of Donald and Marilyn (Laude) Hawkinson. He grew up in Fargo and graduated from Fargo South High School in 1981, playing hockey throughout his high school career. Following graduation he attended the Hennepin Technical College in Minneapolis. David was married to Suzanne (Weinhandl) Hawkinson. They made their home in Wadena, MN where they raised their three children. They also owned and operated the local Taco Johns restaurant in Wadena and he enjoyed his time coaching hockey. David later moved to Fargo where he was employed as Manager of the Lone Star Steakhouse and served as a sales rep for Sysco Foods. For the past 13 years he has been employed as a Sales/Finance Manager for Valley Imports. David was united in marriage to Amy Miller on September 15, 2012 and happily gained three more children. Together they made their home in Fargo.

David’s greatest joy in life involved spending time with his children and grandchildren, being the best grandpa he could be. He also shared the passion for running and triathlon with his wife. He ran 7 marathons including the Boston Marathon in 2011, as well as numerous other races. David’s loving and caring personality was evident by anyone who crossed his path. His precise attention to detail and his relentless pursuit of excellence was evident in the success he had in all phases of his life. Dave had a smile that could brighten any room and a laugh that will never be forgotten by those that he knew and loved.

David joined the Lord on Saturday, June 21, 2014, near Grandin, ND from injuries sustained in a biking accident at age 50 years old. David is survived by his wife, Amy Miller of Fargo; his children – Joshua (Jaclyn) Hawkinson of Annandale, MN; Katherine (Travis) DeGier of Carlos, MN; Evan, Erika, Ellie Miller of Fargo; and Chelsey Ogurchak of Williston, ND; his four grandchildren – Zackary Hawkinson, Alexa DeGier, Easton DeGier, and Brady Hawkinson; and his parents, Donald and Marilyn Hawkinson of Gold Canyon, AZ. Do You Have The Time?

A charmer, yet honest and sincere,
The “baby” of a family of five.
So many friends and family are affected by him here,
    Wishing he was still alive.

He seemed to run a race against time,
    Yet, we were all unaware,
How long, or how short of a time…
    God had placed him here.

He took time to be the best dad a kid could enjoy,
To get down on the floor with a restless grandchild, lulling him to a calmness and sleep with a song,
His trustworthiness gained him countless friends and coworkers with whom he’d get along,
Into this world, he showed optimism, heart and joy, as an adult “middle-aged man” and as a young boy.

In loving memory of my dear old friend Dave, we’ve been golfing buddies and friends for just under a decade and in the recent past we would keep track of every shot and final round score and tally the score cards each year to see who won…needless to say we were at a tie heading into this season, funny how that works. He would never let me win! Dave’s compassion for the game and his family and friends is above everything else, even though he wouldn’t let a challenge stand in his way. Dave’s witty personality, sense of humor, smile and laugh fit him to a tee! My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the family and friends of Davie (as I called him), once you crossed paths with Dave, you had never met a more caring soul. He loved everyone he worked with, ran with, biked with and even the nice guy at the pro shop that gave him a rain check for 9 holes of golf when he couldn’t finish his 18 holes in 2 hours because of darkness. Dave never gave up on anything! Dave’s life was a glorious one and unfortunately ended way too short. Thankfully he finally met the one person that completed him, Amy, what a gal, mother and wife to our Dave, David and Davie. In closing, my heart felt sorrow for his parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. I hope that you have Facebook up there in heaven Dave so that you can keep up with everyone, not that you won’t be looking down on all of us. I love you and always will. Rest in peace my friend.

  11. Lee’s Summit MissouriI am so sorry to hear about David’s passing. My thoughts and prayers to all. He is now with his son in heaven.

  12. Hawkinson family,

My heart goes out to all of you in this time of need, he was taken away from us way too early in life. I had only known Dave for the past few years in the running community but he had always greeted me with a smiling face and had a demeanor about him that was contagious. He will now be greeted at the gates by his son and they can start back where they left off.

Thoughts and prayers go out to each and every one of you.

    Jerry Oye

  13. Moorhead Amy, I am so sad to here of David’s passing. You both were such special people to share with during our time at grief share. I just want to give my condonlences to David and his family. i was on an Amtrack Train going to wisconsin since my brother is in the icu with severe brain damage from an accident, anyways we watched the accident happen right before our eyes and stopped the train, i have a little medical training so i was one of the first off the train, by the time i got to david and checked his pulse it was gone, so i rotated out with our conductor on doing compressions while the nurse that was aboard was doing resperations, we did
CPR on this man for about 20 minutes as the AED would not allow us to shock him becuase his heart was not fibberlating, by the time resuce got there they allowed us to continue doing cpr for approximately 5 more minutes on david, until the told us to stop, i offer my deepest condolences to your family and to david, if there are any questions i may be able to answer feel free to give me a call at 701-301-7945 and ask for alex…. my god bless you and your family

Our deepest sympathies are with the entire Hawkinson family in your time of loss. We were fortunate to know Dave and enjoy time with him over the years. Most recently, it was fun to see him at various races and kids’ activities with his new family. They say the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long….Dave surely shined bright and will be greatly missed. May God hold you in his hands as you work through the loss of David and put you at peace knowing he is resting now with Andy.

We had the privilege of meeting and visiting with Dave on many occasions, and he was always smiling and so polite. Evan, Erika, and Ellie (3 of our grandchildren) enjoyed spending time with Dave, and he seemed to be a wonderful stepdad to them all.
Our hearts are heavy with sadness, and we can only hope and pray that something positive will be the outcome from this tragic death.
To Amy, Evan, Erika, Ellie, and all of the rest of Dave’s family, we are so very sorry that you have lost such a special person in your lives. Dave was obviously well-loved in the community, and admired for his positive outlook on everything. We know there will be a major void in your lives, and we pray that your faith, along with the support of family and friends, will help you find the strength to cope.
God bless each and every one of you. Tears will be shed for a long time, but don’t forget to smile at the thought of Dave, too. He’ll be watching for that.

  27. White Bear Twp MN
Our sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of David Hawkinson.

We were aboard the Amtrak returning to St Paul when the accident occurred parallel to our train. We were shaken to the core and immediately joined in prayer for your precious David. He was not alone, our Lord was with him. We believe it will be of comfort to you to know how quickly all medical personnel aboard the train (this included a doctor) were dispatched to give immediate aid. We have a new respect for Amtrak for this display of compassion. David was lying in lush green grass, not on the pavement.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Ps 116:15

The driver of the pickup was distraught and in such agony we wept for him too.
