Obituary

Donald J. Metzger, 54, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from a lengthy battle with cancer, at home under the care of Hospice, surrounded by his loving family and comforted by his wife.

Don was born August 13, 1959, in Langdon, North Dakota, to Leonard and Esther Metzger. Don was a 1978 graduate of Langdon High School. He attended Lake Region Junior College, Devils Lake, ND, graduating in 1979 earning a welding certificate. He was an employee of Case New Holland for over 30 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his career as a welder and his relationships with his co-workers.

On September 29, 2007, Don married Renae (Haugen). He often declared how grateful he was that he had found his angel.

Don was active in Beginning Experience (B.E.) and was a mentor to anyone needing comfort. He was eager to help and in a crisis, one could count on Don’s support.

Don enjoyed deer hunting and woodworking. Always a prankster, Don loved a good joke. He could be counted on to entertain us with a story or a tall tale but he had a serious side, too. His advice was sought after and valued.

Don loved good food and socializing but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family and especially his grand-daughter, Rylie.

While facing the debilitating pain from a long-term terminal illness, he taught us a lot about living with dignity and courage. He never complained. Don will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father Leonard Metzger.

He is survived by his wife, Renae (Haugen);  two children, son, Jayson Metzger, Fargo, ND, daughter, Amanda (fiancé Tyler Tronnes) Metzger, Fargo, ND; two step-daughters, Nicole (fiancé Dominick Ruggiero), Norfolk, VA, Sara (Mason) Rector, Queensbury, NY; mother, Esther Metzger, Fargo, ND, five sisters; Rebecca Metzger, Grand Forks, ND, Mary Eddy, Moorhead, MN, Jan (Larry) Rieck, Durbin, ND, Helen (Don) Borgen, Fargo, ND, Karen Kolbinger, Fargo, ND, one brother, Darrell (Bev) Metzger, Langdon, ND and one grand-daughter, Rylie Tronnes, Fargo, ND and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Don’s family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for their compassion and care during Don’s illness.

Our deepest sympathies to all of Don’s family. May he rest in the peace of Christ, and may we all learn to suffer well as we follow Don’s example.

I have many memories of riding on the school bus and getting stuck in the Metzger yard (much joy because it was fun to be late to school). Also many happy memories of church, processions, CCD classes, and much more with Don and Darrell.

God’s peace and comfort to all of you,

    Laurie
