Doris (Strand) Thoreson, 99, died peacefully at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN on April 19, 2007. She was born to Syvert and Marie Strand on June 18, 1907 at home on the south side of the state line near Ellendale, ND, which she always called home. She attended a rural one room school near her home and then attended high school and early years of college at the Ellendale Normal School. She later received her ?Standard? two year college degree from Minot State University, and after attending years of summer school sessions, received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1963 from Moorhead State University. She was united in marriage to Harold T. Thoreson in August 1927. He died in 1945 and left her a young widow to raise their three sons, Donald, 17, Duane, 13, and Lowell, 12. She instilled in her sons the social and economic value of hard work during their early years. Doris taught in elementary grade schools for 35 years and spent many summers working at J. C. Penney as well as attending summer school. The schools she taught in with her husband were Wright School, McClean County, White School near Anamoose and Baldwin, north of Valley City, where Harold died. After his death, she taught at Noltimier, north of Valley City, Wimbledon, Sanborn, Gardner, Kindred, and Bowdon in North Dakota, and 10 years in Oregon before retiring in 1972. She then made her home in Fargo until moving to Emmanuel Nursing Home three years ago. She was a faithful member of St. Matthew?s Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church, devoted many years to delivering senior meals, was a member of Sons of Norway, Eastern Star, and North Dakota Retired Teachers Association. She was a generous donor to many charities. She was looking forward to her 100th birthday in June, and as the only surviving child of Syvert Strand, the reunion of those descendants in the Forbes ND area on July 21. She will be sorely missed by her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald (Mary Lou), Pelican Rapids, MN, Duane (Mary Lou), Vergas, MN, Lowell (Audrey), Camino, CA; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandchild, one great grandchild, eight brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: 4-6 p.m. ? Sunday ?
