Obituary

Dorothy Lillian Garvey, 90 of Fargo, ND died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Rosewood Nursing Home, Fargo, ND.  She is sorely missed by many.

Dorothy was born August 19, 1923 to Hermann & Margaret Muller in Staten Island, NY.  She met, fell in love, and Nov 7, 1947 married Gerald R. Garvey (Jerry), a Merchant Marine.  After the service they moved to Fargo, Jerry’s home of origin.  Together, they raised three children and celebrated their 56 wedding anniversary before Jerry passed away January 7, 2003.  Dorothy was Mom and dear friend to many.  She supported Jerry’s insurance claim work creating memorable and loving homes 4 years in Omaha NE, 9 years in Bismarck ND, and then back to their beloved Fargo ND.  Additionally, Dorothy & Jerry maximized their summers at their Franklin Lake MN Cabin, Zion Lutheran Church and wonderful friends there.

Love abounded!  Dorothy and Jerry were legendary for generating fun and engaging others in the process.  The banter between the two of them garnered laughter and brought joy to many.  Many still remember Dorothy on television doing State Bank commercials highlighting their magnificent care of seniors.  She loved their St John Lutheran, Fargo and Zion Lutheran, Pelican Rapids church communities and activities.  She whole heartedly supported selfless service for God and country and even walked in support of the troops.  She loved the Fargo and Pelican Rapids Seniors clubs where lunch, cards and good fellowship abounded.

Dorothy loved her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren.  She and Jerry loved to travel internationally and nationally with family and friends always a memorable occasion.  Dorothy loved her family in both the East and Midwest and endeared herself always near and far.

Dorothy is survived by her son Gary (Dianne) Garvey of Pelican Rapids MN, daughter Carol (Craig) Carlson of Clifton VA, and son Richard (Nancy) Garvey of Fargo.  Eight Grandchildren Zach, Luke (Noelle), and Ben Garvey of White Bear Lake MN, David and Cari Carlson of VA, Jamie (Catie) Garvey of Fargo, Katie (Tucker) Kelley of CA, and Berta Garvey of OR.  There are 5 great grandchildren Turi, Soren, Axel, and Solvi of Fargo ND and Lily of Stillwater, MN.  She is also survived by her sister Shirley (Ed) Atlak of Staten Island, sisters-in-law Shirley Muller of Pocono Lakes PA, Donna (Jerry) Elledge of Barnesville MN and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry, brother Ralph, sister-in-law Patricia Garvey.

Please honor the life of Dorothy Lillian Garvey with charitable support of Red River Valley Hospice. They were magnificent in her and many others time of need.

Thanks be to the Good Lord who has Blessed us with the life of Dorothy Lillian Garvey.  There is dancing and card playing with Jerry and many friends in the heavens tonight.

While we never met you in person, Dear Dorothy, we knew you because of Carol and Craig’s love for you and their relationship with us since our friendship began while living in Germany. They were with us here in Arizona when you were called to meet your Lord and Master where we will hopefully finally all be together someday.
