Obituary

Earl passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Elim Care Center in Fargo at the age of 92.
Earl was born on September 29, 1924, to Joseph and Nettie (Parkos) Rachac in Conway, North Dakota. Earl grew up and attended school in Conway. At the age of 15, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for two years. He later joined the U.S. Armed Forces and served in Japan during WWII. It was during his time in the army that he discovered his love for cooking which was one of his many talents.
On December 22, 1948, he married the love of his life Arlene Skjerven. During their 68-year marriage they raised five children and made their home in North Dakota, Washington State and California.
Earl spent his career working predominantly in the lumber industry. Most recently, he served as maintenance engineer at Unity Hospital in Grafton, ND. He retired in 1986.
Earl was a self-taught musician and played the piano, organ, accordion, guitar, banjo and steel guitar with ease. After retirement, Earl was in a country western band for ten years. The “Cross Country” band played on weekends extensively throughout North Dakota and Minnesota.
Earl will be remembered for his brilliant smile, kind heart and infectious laugh. Earl was a trickster and was known for his wit and devilish sense of humor.
In addition to his love for music, Earl also enjoyed classic cars and cooking feasts for his family and friends.
Earl was the final living member of his family’s generation. He is survived by his wife, Arlene Rachac, Fargo; children, Gary of Mt. Helix, CA, Deby (Richard) Arnold of San Diego, CA, Brad of Fargo and Linda (Jonathan) Wyman of Oakwood, GA.
Earl is also survived by his grandchildren, Wendy (Nathan) Reulman of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, Christopher (Aleshia) Arnold of Overland Park, KS, Breanna Rachac of Fargo, Devin Rachac of Fargo, Adam Rachac of Oceanside, CA and his five beloved great granddaughters Abigail, Aubrie and Addison Reulman and Anabelle and Alice Arnold.
He is preceded in death by his son Robert “Bob” Rachac in 2009.

This describes Earl so well, beautifully written! I’ll always have loving and warm memories of Earl and Arlene’s visits to our home during winters. They made an active effort to create a relationship with Adam which he treasures. Even though they’ve lived miles apart they made us feel loved and close. We will sure miss Earl, his laugh and especially his story telling!

I’ll never forget Grandpa Earl’s infectious laugh. He loved a good time which usually included a great meal and a good meal. Come to think of it…that sounds like me. Grandpa is definitely the source of our height and our long legs 😉
