Edfred H. Vasey, 71, Fargo, died Saturday, October 30, 2004, at SCCI Hospital in Fargo. He was born to Louis and Adah Vasey on August 29, 1933, in Mott, ND. He graduated from Mott High School in 1951. Ed attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University), earning his B.S. in 1955 and his M.S. in 1957, both in Soil Science. He married Joyce Lorenz on June 25, 1955. They lived in Fargo until 1956, then briefly in Ulen, MN, before Ed served as 2nd Lt. at Fort Benning, GA, in 1957. He then attended Purdue University, earning his doctorate in Soil Science in 1961. Ed and Joyce and their family returned to Fargo, where he was Director of the Soil Testing Lab at NDSU. He joined the NDSU Extension Service in 1967 and received several awards during his career there. He retired from the Extension Service in March 1992, when he was named Professor Emeritus. After retirement, Ed worked as an agricultural consultant in various capacities, mostly as the Spring Wheat Doctor. He loved working with wood, restoring and refinishing furniture, and caning chairs, and taught various classes in those areas. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Church, including the Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, and Hearts of Gold senior group. He also delivered flowers for Hornbacher?s in his retirement. He is survived by his wife Joyce; son Jeff (Vicky) and granddaughter Lydia, Portland, OR; son Mike (Paula) and granddaughters Katie, Libby, and Cecilia, Columbus, OH; daughter Krista (Bruce) Stenhaug, grandson Ben, and granddaughter Kalin, Apple Valley, MN; daughter Karla (Bill) Block, granddaughter Maddie and grandson William, Minneapolis, MN; brothers Frank, Bismarck, ND and Robert, Mott, ND; sister Marjorie Holloway, Fresno, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty (Kenn) Wanner and Etta Mae (James) Leonard, and sister-in-law Jeannie (Frank) Vasey. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Church of the Holy Spirit, Fargo. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 8-8:30 p.m. in Church of the Holy Spirit, with a prayer service at 8:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held in the church on Thursday one hour prior to the service.
