Edith Sandvig

Edith L. (Johnson) Sandvig, 89, Fargo passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo.
Edith was born to Bernard and Alice (McKay) Johnson on December 29, 1923 in Sandune Township near McLeod, ND. After her education in McLeod, she took care of an invalid aunt. When she was 18 years old she moved to St. Paul, MN and worked in a bakery. She then became employed at Armour Company in South St. Paul in the canning department. She was there for 3 years. This is where she met her husband to be, Hilbert Augustine Sandvig. She moved to Fargo and began working at Dakota Paint and Glass. Edith and Hilbert were married on June 28, 1945 in Moorhead, MN. They farmed in the Sheldon area until moving into Leonard in 1975. Edith cooked at the Leonard School for 13 ½ years. She retired in 1988. Hilbert died in 1996. She has been a member of the Silver Springs Homemakers and Helendale Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her children; A. Eileen Rinde (Paul) Hoople, ND, and L. Dean Sandvig, McLeod, ND, Grandchildren, Steven (Amy), Nita (Brad), Karla (Chris), Dean, Rozalyn, Adam and Matthew and numerous Great-Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings; Lauris Johnson, Eleanor Olson and Opal Sandvig.

I visited Edith many times at Villa when I was there visting my grandmother. Such a warm and easy person to visit with was Edith – I always looked forward to her smile. I shall miss her dearly.
I am sorry to hear of Edith’s passing. She was a wonderful school cook! I enjoyed working with her during my time as superintendent at Leonard. Please accept my sincere sympathy.

Edith was a good friend of my Mom, Margie McShane, at Villa Maria. She was a wonderful person with such a kind heart. I am sure they will have a few more games of chinese checkers in Heaven as they played many games together at the Villa. Your Mom was a joy to visit with and feel blessed having had the opportunity to know her.

Duane & I are in Colorado Springs, Co. & won’t be able to attend the celebration of Edith’s long & wonderful life. I’ve known Edith for many years, and at one time we were both in, what we called “Chubby Club”. The goal was to lose weight, but often, Edie would serve the members her homemade doughnuts! What a funny & classy lady. Lately, Duane & I came to think of her as our “second Mom,” and we loved her dearly. Whenever our grandson, Caleb, visited us from Co., he always wanted to see Edith and they would have some lively talks. Our sympathy goes out to Dean, his sons & grandson & to Eileen & family. Edith was one great lady. I got to know her from Villa Marie, where she and my mother, Margie McShane became great friends. Oh, the games of chinese checkers those two played were endless- they so enjoyed each others company! My sister and I saw Edith two Sundays ago and she was pretty chatty that day. My sympathy to your family as you mourn the loss of your loved one. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
