Edna Louise Crotty Riendeau of Hillsboro, who was well known for her sense of humor, her lefse and, most of all, her devotion to her family, passed away peacefully at home May 23, surrounded by the people she loved. Edna was born January 12, 1960, the youngest of four children, to Ruth (Doeden) and Robert Crotty. After graduating from high school, she continued her education at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. Edna later moved to Hazen where in 1981 she was blessed with the birth of her boys, Eric and Joe. She moved back to Hillsboro in 1983. Edna was blessed with another son, Josh, in 1992. Edna had her work cut out for her being a mom to three adventurous boys who loved to get a reaction out of her. She was involved in all their activities and never missed an opportunity to spend time with family. Her greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren. She was present for every milestone. Edna worked for Traill County Social Services for many years and served many roles, including homemaker, office assistant and eligibility technician. Her coworkers will tell you that they all loved to work with her because she was fun! Edna retired from Traill County in December 2019. She also worked part-time in other various positions which included driving a school bus and beet trucks. Edna was the sole proprietor of Nana’s Kitchen, which was named after the role she cherished the most, being a grandma. Edna had been a member of the United Methodist Church since her confirmation in 1974. Edna served as president of the Women’s Fellowship and as the church custodian. Additionally, she was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary and the Hillsboro Vets Club. Edna was celebrated by all who knew her for her lefse and baked goods. She enjoyed Minnesota Twins baseball and was an avid fan of catcher Joe Mauer. Edna went on many trips with her girlfriends. She will be remembered for her humor, kindness, drive, and determination. Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Robert Crotty, her niece, Stephanie Crotty, and her brother-in-law, Vance Smelden. She is survived by her sons, Eric Straus (Erin) of West Fargo, Joe Straus (Alisa) of Horace and Josh Riendeau (Shenay) of Hillsboro; her grandchildren, Ava, Audra and Alec Straus of Horace; her siblings, Joyce Smelden, Ed Crotty (Rose) and Jim Crotty; and numerous extended family. Special thanks to Edna’s medical providers, hospice, the community of Hillsboro, and her friend, Roxanne Townsend, all of whom graciously have supported Edna and her family.
