Elizabeth “Betty” (Laturnus) Schiele, 83, Fargo, ND passed away on December 4, 2020 in her home surrounded by family.

Betty was born October 23, 1937 to Sylvester and Gunda Jane (Steffan) Laturnus. The family lived in Saskatchewan, Canada until moving to Starkweather, ND in 1947 and then to the Cando area a few years later. She graduated from Cando high school. She was united in marriage to Phillip J. Schiele on October 14, 1957 in Devils Lake, ND. They made their home in Fargo. Phillip passed away in 2004.

Growing up she helped on the farm and worked in retail. Phillip and Betty started a family and she was a stay at home mom. Phil and Betty were foster parents to many, many newborn babies. Later Betty worked for Florence Crittenton with unwed mothers, for Fraser Hall, and then provided daycare for over 30 years.

Betty had a huge heart and was the ultimate caregiver and she gave so much to so many for her entire life.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for their care and concern.

She is survived by her brother Peter (Donna Lou); her children: Mike, Klamath Falls, OR; Joe, Fargo; Mary Tangen (Ray Olson), Fargo; Sue Nieland (Rick), Fargo; Jeff, Grand Forks; and Patrick, Fargo; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and her faithful furbaby, Teddy.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phillip J. Schiele; sisters, Regina Schall and Ann Schiele; brothers, Fred, Paul, John, George, Joseph, Frank, Ed, Martin, and Wendell Laturnus.

Visitation: Friday, December 11, 5 pm – 7 pm with a prayer service at 7 at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
Funeral: Saturday, December 12 at 11 am at St. Anthony’s of Padua Catholic Church, Fargo with visitation starting at 10:00 AM
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.

    Sue and family,
Betty was like a grandma to myself and my younger 3 children. She had the biggest and most amazing heart for children it was like kids say that and were instantly drawn to her. I will miss her a lot it just won’t be they same at daycare without her. I know my 5 year olds will miss her a lot. May she rip Grandma Betty ❤️

So sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. She always had a ready smile whenever I saw her. I especially loved that she would always greet my Mom and Dad on her way back from Communion. How sweet! My sympathy to the Schiele family. From one of your 8th Avenue neighbors. Donna
