Evelyn passed away on April 25, 2011 at Bethany Retirement Living surrounded by her loving family.

Evelyn Verke was born on May 26, 1923, in Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Martha (Bendickson) Verke. Evelyn was united in marriage to Clifford "Dale" North on November 14, 1943 in Bemidji, MN. Throughout their lives together the couple lived in many places due to Clifford's military service career. Most of all they made their home in Bemidji, MN. Other places the family traveled and made their home in include, Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, Hawaii, California, and Germany .

Evelyn will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and friend. She had a great love for each of her children and grandchildren in a very special, unique way. Evelyn loved reading, singing, cooking and baking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She also was very active throughout her life in many different veteran's organizations - always a strong supporter of military and their families. Clifford passed away in September of 1990. Evelyn had made her home at Bethany Retirement Living since March of 2008.

Evelyn is survived by her children, David North of Sonoma, CA; Christy Hagen of Grand Forks, ND; John North of Fargo; Mark (Kathy) North of Fargo; and Michele North-Neigum of Grand Forks, ND; nine grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Karstin Verke and Edward Verke, both of Bemidji, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Clifford Dale North; her brother, Morris "Buddy" Verke; a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

The family would like to offer a very special thank you to the staff at Bethany on South University and Hospice of the Red River Valley. They helped make the last years of Evelyn's life very meaningful.

Memorials are preferred to Bethany on South University or Hospice of the Red River Valley.

  1. Bemidji MN
It is with sympathy that I read her obituary. My grandmother and mother would talk about Samuel North and his children – including Dale and wife Evelyn. I would have liked to know the family as I am working on a family tree for the North family. I am currently looking for information regarding Dale’s grandfather and my gg-grandfather Peter Solomon North. I would also like to connect with others in the North family.

  2. Fargo My thoughts and prayers go out to you. Evelyn was such a pleasure to take care of in her last few months at Bethany. Every time I entered her room I’d always ask her to tell me stories, and they were ALWAYS so interesting… And I always had her laughing when I told her I could smell her in the hallway because of her “Sweet Pea” lotion she wore every day. That’s how I knew she was up and around for the day. She will be very greatly missed. Kayla Ziegelman

  3. I’m sorry for your loss my thought and prayers for the family she was a loving person she will be missed. I work at Bethany I will miss her and I watching the Vikings games together listening to her yell at the tv.
