Obituary

Evon passed away on June 3, 2010 at the age of 87 at the Hillsboro Medical Center after a 5 year battle with ovarian cancer. Her devoted family was at her bedside.

Evon Lillian Jahn was born on November 7, 1922 to Oscar and Lillian (Pederson) Jahn in Hillsboro. She grew up on the family farm where she learned a strong work ethic. It was said she could out work many a man on the farm. She attended Bloomfield grade school and graduated from Bohnsack High School. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist church. She later attended Interstate Business College and NDSU until moving to the West Coast during WWII. Evon worked in California and Washington in the factories during the war. She was united in marriage to Marlin Manthey and they had a daughter, Vonie. In 1955 she married Duane Nelson and to them was born a daughter, Tanya. They couple farmed until they retired in 1988. She was a superb seamstress in the area for many years, a hard working farm wife, and terrific cook and lefse maker. She loved taking care of her family, bingo, and mowing the lawns. She was proudest of her granddaughter, Briana, who inherited her grandma’s artistic talents.

Evon is survived by her husband, Duane; her daughters, Vonie Manthey and Tanya Nelson; and her granddaughter, Briana Nelson all of Hillsboro; her brother, Frederick (Avis) Jahn; and her aunt, Francis Lambert all of Hesperia, CA; many cousins and her dog, Chico. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Evon’s family would like to thank everyone involved in her care over the past 5 years – the physicians and staff at MeritCare Hospital, Drs. Russell and Gaba; everyone at Roger Maris Cancer Center; Drs. Luithle and Breen and the staff from the HMC; Hospice of the RRV; and to Pastor Young and all who visited, called, or sent cards during her time of illness.

Sorry we missed the funeral. Wally had dialysis that day. He is doing quit well. Weak and slow. Sure remember the good old days when we were together so much. Think about them often. She was a great lady, taught me a lot of things. Evon use to sew me clothes when I was little . we were great friends. She sure was a worker, everything had to be just so. We never knew she had been so sick, for so long. Seems after we moved lost touch with everybody. You all take care of each other. That is what she would have wanted. Love, Wally and Donna
