After World War II, he attended the North Dakota Agricultural College and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Glendive, MT, as a telegrapher. He met Betty Lou Kienitz who was a Registered Nurse at the Northern Pacific Hospital in Glendive, and they were married on February 7, 1953. Their son, Henry Karl Uhlman, was born in 1953 and died in 1955. Their daughter, Sue, was born in 1955, and their son, Kenny Lee, in 1957. They moved to Fargo in 1970 where he accepted the position of Wire Chief and retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1982.

He was an active member in the Masonic Lodge in Glendive, MT, and Fargo, ND, along with the Boy Scouts of America, the El Zagel Shrine, and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife Betty Lou; his daughter Sue Eppler and her daughter Angela Eppler of Fargo, ND; his son Ken and his wife Audrey and their children, Laura Uhlman and Austin Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be sent to Boy Scout Troop 204, 613 16th Street South, Fargo, ND, 58103, where he provided leadership and received the Baden Powell award in 1975. The award was for his work and ability to turn abandoned railroad ties into fence posts and telegraph poles into firewood, which raised funds that enabled Scouts to attend summer camps and make improvements at the Camp Wilderness Boy Scout facility in Minnesota. He also worked with his son Ken on his Eagle Scout project, a Cross made with a driftwood cedar tree from Glendive, MT, which is still used in Bethlehem Lutheran Church?s Easter services.
