Obituary

Gladys Johnson, 80, Fargo, ND passed away at Manor Care after many years of fighting three occurrences of cancer.   Most recently, she was diagnosed with bone cancer which, despite aggressive treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, she left this world very peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2014. Gladys Jaeger was born on June 1, 1934 in Winthrop, Minnesota to Berthold Jaeger and Esther (Hofferman) Jaeger.  She was raised on her family’s farm near Brownton, Minnesota and relocated to Fargo where she worked at St. John’s and Dakota Hospitals.  In 1964, she began real estate sales and soon became a real estate broker, and established “Faith Realty & Development”. After retiring from her career in real estate, she enjoyed traveling extensively to many countries around the world, fulfilling a life-long dream.  She loved volunteering at local theaters and supported the F-M Symphony and attended many exhibits at local galleries.  She thoroughly enjoyed gardening at her home and was an avid bird watcher.  She worked with the Audubon Society during seasonal migrations and her back yard is any bird’s favorite stop. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Roxanne (Johnson) Napolitano, Fargo and her granddaughter, Rachel Napolitano, New York City.

I was sad to hear of her passing. I admired her curiosity, her sense of purpose, & her work ethic. She was, in my view, a modern woman: open, tolerant, & thoughtful.

Gladys was a long-time volunteer for the Fargo Theatre. She was incredibly giving and dedicated to our organization. We always knew we could call Gladys if we found ourselves in a pinch and needed extra help. On a personal note, Gladys was very patient and friendly to me when I first started working at the Theatre. I will always be grateful for her kindness. We will miss her very much. Her family is in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the pleasure of being Gladys’ roommate on a trip to Ecuador and the Gal├ípagos Islands. It was one of several trips she took with student groups from MSU Moorhead. We had a grand time. While I hadn’t known her before the trip, getting to spend a week with her was an added bonus, and unexpected treat. I heard a lot about her daughter and granddaughter, of whom she was very proud. My sincere condolences to you.

I will miss seeing Gladys at various events in town. She was quite a lady and a role model for living life.

menomonie Even though it’s been 14 years since I met Gladys and laughed together on our trip to China, we had yearly telephone chats reviewing her busy and happy life.
We also flew out East to my nieces wedding about 10 years ago. We were a little late to the church, as our directions weren’t always the greatest, but we still enjoyed our times together.
She was a lady of class and worth. I’m sure her family will truly miss her helpful nature as will the many others she encountered.

Gladys was a dear friend for the past 25 years and we will miss her very much. I first met her at the Concordia Language camp and then traveled with her to Russia. She was always busy with her volunteer work and was always happy to see all her friends. She was especially proud of l you, Roxanne, and kept us up to date on your many achievements in life. I will miss our noon lunches and hearing about her thoughts on politics and the medical establishments in Fargo. Our deepest sympathy to you, Roxanne, and other family members.

Gladys and I often volunteered at the same event. It got to be that we’d shake our heads when we both showed up at the same place. It was just my good luck to be there when she was. She always had a smile while she was working and a spark that showed she was enjoying it. My condolences to her family

I was a volunteer caregiver to her for a short time but enjoyed her company every time I was at her place. When she went to the hospital it was only right for me to visit her there and at Manor care.

I met my friend Gladys almost 40 years ago. She was always a huge supporter of any and all my adventures both professionally and personnaly. I’ll miss her “to the point” advice and comments. With a wink and a smile I called her mom. With a wink and a smile she’d call me son.

We are so sorry to see Gladys gone and offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to Roxanne and the rest of the family. Gladys helped us sell rental homes that needed to be sold and was a great friend to Lois over many years. They shared many things, ideas and reading material. We enjoyed Gladys’ company for many years at Thanksgiving and seeing her turn up all over the place doing volunteer work, attending an event or just plain exploring. She never let things rest but now is the time for her to rest.

Gladys was a good and loyal friend of our family. We offer Roxanne and everyone our deepest and respectful condolences. Gladys helped my parents, Bob (Adrian) and Lois sell rental properties that needed to be sold and did not let that rest. We enjoyed Gladys at annual thanksgiving dinners and Gladys was a great friend to Lois, now 92, just as she was to Freda Paper, age 98. Gladys was a real trooper involved with everything and never let things rest. Now it is her turn to rest.

While she was active in a number of Science Center activities, she was very involved in the Science Center’s participation in the Feeder Watch Program(a national program to measure the population of birds during the winter.) She did enjoy watching birds!
