Grant Hoffner

grant hoffner
Grant Joseph Hoffner 74, of Fargo, ND, and Casa Grande, AZ, died peacefully in his “man-cave” in Arizona of natural causes on February 25th. Grant was born August 10, 1946 to Herb and Nila Hoffner in Dickinson, ND. He grew up on a farm near Werner, ND. He graduated from Halliday High School, where he was a starter on the basketball team. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for two years as a military police officer. Grant attended college in Dickinson, ND and Fargo, ND majoring in Psychology, where he was also a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He married his high school sweetheart, Julie Ann Bosch in 1969 and they were blessed with three children, Rebecca, John, and Tricia. They lived in Fargo, where Grant worked as a letter carrier for the US Post Office and enjoyed the “snow-bird” life traveling between Fargo and Casa Grande, Arizona, in retirement. Grant and Julie had 60 wonderful years together, married 52. Grant would always joke that Julie chased him for 8 years and then one day he tripped, fell, and they were married. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on a Rhine-Mosel River Cruise. Grant was passionate about so many things in life. He was a devoted husband and father. He was also thought of as a second father by many. He loved all children and dogs. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, and playing pinochle. He was an avid Bison and Packers football fan. Grant never met a stranger and was a fierce friend. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Everyone who was blessed to know Grant will remember the twinkle in his eye and his ability to tell a story. He loved to travel, mostly with a camper. He loved collecting unusual objects from the places he visited that would spark many of his stories, especially his rattlesnake, wolf pelt, and his gold dipped rat. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Julie, his daughter Rebecca (Kevin), daughter Tricia (Alex), granddaughters Morrigan, and Ciara, and grandson Riley, brother Gordon (Karen), and twin brother Gregg (Sherry). He was preceded in death by his son John, and parents Herb and Nila Hoffner. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Operation Gratitude on behalf of Grant. Donations can be made online at https://www.operationgratitude.com/donate/ or sent by mail to Operation Gratitude, PO Box 260257, Encino, CA 91426-0257. 8. This photograph of our dear friend Grant speaks volumes to all who knew him. So much to love and recall from times together. The “Storyteller” has gone ahead, and we both treasure the opportunity to have known his friendship and spirit. He found the way to smile and make others smile, through thick and thin. Together, Julie and Grant were a team of vitality and resilience and their beautiful, loving family will continue in our hearts forever… Virginia and Al

  9. I am so sorry to hear about Grant. Grant was our mailman when we lived behind Rheault Farms. I always so enjoyed our visits. He gave the kids tootsie rolls and I gave him fresh caught walleye. That was over 25 years ago and I have never forgotten him. His smile, his kindness and his gentle spirit have always stuck with me. We all should feel so lucky to have a Grant in our lives. I work in the Moorhead School District and I would hear of Julie Hoffner from fellow Fargo South teachers and I would always say “Well have you met Grant? Nicest guy I’ve ever known”

  13. Julie, Tricia, Rebecca and family, I’ve been thinking of you a lot this week and I am so, deeply sorry for your loss. Grant had such a fun, loving and gregarious spirit. I remember that warm twinkle in his eye, his stories and the fact the he always had ample spare change for us to get ice cream. I remember that rattlesnake too…. he told me that he had found it in his boot and that it might bite if I touched its teeth!

Grant’s light shone so brightly. I know his memory will endure in the many, many people who’s lives he touched in his time on Earth.

  23. This is for my family, the Hoffner’s

Grant was my best of friends and we both told each other every time we said goodbye that we loved each other. Now I’m especially glad for there is sometimes no tomorrow. And we both knew that and would claim to each other “never know about tomorrow “. Maybe that’s why we always spent quality times together and I benefited from some of the best times of my life.
My first hunt with Grant and family was best weekend of my life, 23 pheasant in 3days, ice-out Northern fishing with Windsor and Phillip Morris, turkey hunting-shooting to be honest, beaver for my “man cave”, 100# halibut, two totaled trucks, blizzard, and many more!
More than that, Grant helped me through several very tough times and I was an ear for for his grief. That’s what friends are for.
RIP my friend until we meet again,
    love lasts forever,

    Wade

Grant defined friend in every way. He and Bill always stopped by on their way back from their annual hunting trips.
