Helen M. Hering, 88, 4949 16th Avenue SW, Fargo, ND, died Saturday, August 13, 2005 in her home. Helen Marie Rackow was born in Winona, MN, on November 7, 1916 to Herman and Cecelia Rackow. She graduated from Cathedral High School and was a proofreader for Leicht Publishing and later employed by the Minnesota Department of Conservation in St. Paul. On December 28, 1940, she married Florian J. Hering in Winona. They made their first home in St. Paul, while Florian was a counseling psychologist at the Fort Snelling Veterans Administration, Minneapolis. They made their second home in Fargo in 1965, when Florian transferred to the VA Hospital there. Helen and her growing family lived briefly in North Carolina and California, while her husband served in the Marine Corps in Korea and Japan from 1950 to 1953. Helen was a homemaker and mother of seven and a longtime member of Holy Spirit Parish in North Fargo. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the homes of her children and proudly followed their careers and delighted in her grandchildren. She also took a great deal of interest in the achievements of her nieces and nephews. In retirement, she was a volunteer tutor in the Minnesota Literacy Program in Moorhead and an avid reader, who frequented the Fargo Public Libraries. She also loved movies and was a big fan of the Minnesota Twins. Helen moved to the Willow Park Apartments in 1994 and enjoyed the friendship of new neighbors and card games. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband (1998), and three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by three sons, Joseph (Roberta) Reston, VA, Mark (Kathleen), Chanhassen, MN, and Kevin (Denise), Laguna Beach, CA; four daughters, Helen Marie (Thomas) Friend, Pelican Rapids, MN, Mary Ann Hering, Dearborn, MI, Rebecca (Jerald) Jacobsen, Naples, FL, and Barbara (Mark) King, Stockton, CA. She also leaves four grandchildren, Lisa (Brian) Groves, Reston, VA, Lance Hering, Centennial, CO, Keith (Amy) Friend, West Fargo, ND, Brian Friend, Fargo, ND, and four great grandchildren, Sabrina, Trevor, Jackson and Emma Memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley. The family is grateful for their kind and professional care. Flowers are preferred from Swenson=s Floral, Moorhead, MN. Visitation: Tuesday 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. in the Boulger Funeral Home. There will also be visitation on Wednesday one hour before the service at the Church.
