Helen Fredrikson was born on February 3, 1912 to Peter and Julia Fredrikson of Davenport, ND. Helen grew up and attended school in Davenport. She attended her senior year of high school at NDAC (currently NDSU). Helen graduated from NDAC in 1934 with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta and Guidon sororities, and she was chosen to lead the junior/senior ball her junior year of college. She was also a member of the NDSU women’s basketball team.

Helen married Fred Williams of Arthur, ND on December 30, 1938 at Davenport Lutheran Church. Helen and Fred built their family home in Arthur shortly after they were married, and Helen continued to live in the home until the time of her death.

Helen and Fred raised their two children, Julie and John, in Arthur along with Fred’s siblings and their families.  The two enjoyed traveling and spent their summers on Lake Sallie and their winters in Arizona.

Helen was known as the “Welcome Lady of Arthur.” She was an active member of the Homemakers Club, Senior Citizens Club, UMW, and the Arthur United Methodist Church.  She served on the Arthur School Board for 15 years and was board president for several years.  Additionally, she was worthy matron of Eastern Star, board member of St. Lukes (Sanford) Hospital Auxiliary, Cass County School Officers Association, and the Homemakers Club Council. Helen was on the NDSU Alumni Board and was a life trustee for the NDSU Development Foundation Board. She was awarded the NDSU Alumni Achievement Award in 1981. Helen loved her church, her family, and her friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Fred; her brothers Clark, James, and Robert; and son-in-law Michael Barner.
