Henry "Hank" Grothman

Henry passed away on Friday, December 14, 2007 at the Hillsboro Medical Center at the age of 89. Henry (H.J. ?Hank?) Grothmann was born in Grandin, ND, on January 4, 1918 to August and Anna (Bettermann) Grothmann. He graduated from Grandin High School in 1935. Hank joined the Unites States Army in early 1942 and served with distinction in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Germany and central Europe. He received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in active duty and was awarded a battlefield commission as he was assigned commander of the 441st Artillery Battalion, 7th Army, when their commander was killed in action. Upon returning home after the war he continued farming with his family until retirement in 1981. Hank enjoyed fishing, playing baseball on the Grandin town team and bowling where he became North Dakota Senior State Champion. Hank is survived by his sisters, Irene Gesell and Elaine (Jim) Johnston; and 13 nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Wilhelm, August, and Carl; his sisters, Martha, Anna and Marian; brother in law, Sy Gesell and sister in law, Gertrude. Hank was a member of several community organizations and an active life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church of Grandin. FUNERAL: 11 AM Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church ?
