Hiram R. Nelson, 93, Hillsboro, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003, in the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home. Hiram R. Nelson was born April 22, 1909, to Joseph N. and Bertha (Hustvedt) Nelson in Hillsboro, ND. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1927, and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1932. He worked in his father's store and cafÈ until change of ownership in 1935. He then began as a clerk at the local post office. He was married to Margaret Haugan in August 1941, at her parent's home in Glendale, CA. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Army and attended Officers Training and earned the rank of Lieutenant. His army career was spent largely on the east coast with the U.S. Postal Service. In 1944, his son Richard was born in Fargo, ND. Returning to Hillsboro in 1946 he resumed his career as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1976 after 40 years of service. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, and the Sons of Norway; Past Commander of the Hillsboro American Legion and Past President of the North Dakota Rural Mail Carriers Association; and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge. Preceding him in death were his brother, Joel, and wife, Margaret in 1956. He leaves a sister, Borghild Crawford; son, Richard Nelson; two nephews, Bruce Crawford of Minnetonka, MN, and Stephen Crawford of Fall River Mills, CA; and numerous cousins. Visitation: Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, from 4-6 PM in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro. Committal Service: Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 2 PM in Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro. Arrangements by Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.
