Irene Humphrey

Irene Grace Humphrey of Fargo, age 97, died peacefully on April 13, 2009, at her daughter?s home in Nevada City, California. Irene was born August 27, 1911 in rural Gardner, ND to Blanche and Edward Waterfall. She graduated from Gardner High School and became a Registered Nurse in 1932 at St. Johns Hospital School of Nursing in Fargo. She practiced nursing as an assistant to the County Doctor at Gardner. On June2, 1935, she married Wilbert Humphrey of Grandin, ND, and they farmed in several locations in ND. Irene returned to Nursing in 1955 and worked as a head nurse at both St. John?s Hospital and St. Luke?s Hospital. After retiring she logged thousands of hours of volunteer work at Meritcare, Meals- on -Wheels, FM Community Theatre, and Riverview Place among others. Service to others and to her family was a central feature of her life. Irene enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and cooking, especially teaching the grandchildren the fine points of making cookies. She was an avid walker and scrabble player. Irene was preceded in death by husband, Wilbert and son, Burton. She is survived by her children; Donna (Richard) Tuntland, Roberta (Wayne) Terres, and David (Sharon) Humphrey; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visitation and Prayer Service: Thursday, April 30 at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo from 5 to 7. Celebration of Live Service: Friday, May 1 Riverview Place, Fargo from 2 to 3. Visitation is 1 hour prior. Memorials preferred to: Hospice of the Red River Valley or Riverview Place.
