Isel Vangerud, age 95, of West Fargo, ND, went home to his Lord and Savior on February 28, 2021, at his home at Edgewood Vista in Fargo.
Isel Blaine Vangerud was born on July 10, 1925, in Fargo, to Ingvald and Betsy Vangerud. He graduated from Central High School in 1943. He entered the Marines and served honorably in WWII and was an Iwo Jima survivor.
He married Alice Moon on July 19, 1947. They farmed for many years in Minnesota. He was also a Moorhead mail carrier for many years. He was an incredible story teller and letter writer.
Isel was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leon Vangerud; and his sisters - Bev Wolter and Mae Richards.
Isel is survived by the love of his life, Alice; his son, Brad (Lori) Vangerud; his daughter, Lori (Vern) Goble; his grandchildren - Brandon (Diane Berg) Goble, Ryan (Heather) Vangerud, Ashley Vangerud; and his great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his special sister-in-law, Martha Probst; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church – South Campus in Fargo with a gathering one hour prior. Everyone is welcome to attend this service – for those unable, the service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website. Luncheon to follow the service and a private interment will be at the Fargo National Cemetery near Harwood, N.D.

I am so sorry to hear about Isel’s passing. I remember both he and Leon on the Honor Flight trips. In fact, one of my favorite memories was watching Isel and another Iwo Jima survivor visting at the base of the Marine Corps Memorial on our trip. I’m blessed to have met him. Sympathies to your entire family.

Sorry for your loss. Prayers for strength and peace.
We will miss Isel a lot. He was a gentleman who looked after Alice very carefully. His personal warmth was expressed in a gentle, caring and astute manner. We knew him only through visits at church, but we always tried to sit directly ahead of them so we could exchanged greetings often. The Lord spoke to us through him and gave to us a model for life and for worship.
God’s peace and blessings to all of Isel’s family and friends. He will be missed.

I am so sorry we are not able to attend today’s service! I know Uncle Isel had a very full life, and I am certain you have many wonderful memories. I will always remember his excellent storytelling and dry wit! I have always been grateful that he and Alice were able to be with my mother just hours before she passed.
