James "Buck" Holo

James ? Buck? Holo was born July 24, 1917, at Arnegard, McKenzie County, North Dakota, to James Julius Holo and Helen (Bjornstad) Holo. He attended Grammar and High School there. In 1939 he entered Mayville State Teachers College, and after two years was called up for Military training at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on July 7, 1941. In July of 1944 as First Lieutenant in the US Infantry, he was shipped to Europe during World War II and was returned to the US in November of 1945. There he received an honorable discharge as a Captain, US Infantry, in January of 1946. He was then placed in reserve until September of 1949 when he was released from Military duty with the rank of Captain. In the meantime, he was enrolled again at Mayville State College to finish his degree in Education. After his junior year, he was united in marriage to Hazel Genevieve Evanson on September 4, 1947. They moved to Mayville, where she worked at Bohnsack Drug during his senior year. That spring he was hired by Superintendent Lars Grant to teach music and other subjects at Hillsboro High School. After teaching music, mathematics and several business subjects for thirty two years, he retired in June of 1980 at the age of 63. Buck?s good wife, Hazel, died November 18, 1996 at the age of 72 after long stays in hospitals. She was born November 3, 1924. They had almost 50 years of wedded life together. Buck, as everybody knew him, was a member of and a conductor of Our Savior Lutheran Church Choir all of his adult life. He organized a large Youth Choir shortly after he began teaching in Hillsboro, and led that group for seventeen years. He also had one of the best marching bands in the state of North Dakota for most of his thirty two years in teaching. He was an American Legion member and a Life Member of the VFW and always had his band out for the Military functions. Survivors are: a daughter, Marilyn (Thomas) Harris, Peoria, AZ; a son Wayne D. Holo, Hilllsboro, ND; a son John M. (Juliana) Holo, Seattle, WA; a grandson, Matt (Laura) James Harris, Phoenix, AZ; a granddaughter, Rachel E. Harris, San Diego, CA; a granddaughter, Katherine Holo, Seattle, WA; a great granddaughter, Ashleigh and Emily Volz, Phoenix, AZ; and brother, O.L. ?Rip? Holo, Post Falls, ID; a brother, W.B. ?Bill? Holo, St. Petersburg, FL; and a brother Dale A. Holo, will call. Besides his wife, Hazel he was preceded in death by his parents, James Julius Holo and Helen (Bjornstad) Holo, a brother, Austin E.Holo; a sister, Ruth Arnegard, and a sister, Wini (Arvie) Ternquist. Funeral Services: A Memorial Service will be at Our Savior?s Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, ND, July 23, Wednesday at 10 AM.
