Jestina Vangsness, formerly of Kindred,ND. died Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon ND. She was 91 years of age.
Jestina Constance Enger as born April 18, 1914, on a farm south of Gladstone, ND to parents Jens and Cora (Bilden) Enger. She attended a nearby rural school and in 1931, graduated as Valedictorian in the last graduating class from Gladstone High School. After her mother died, Jestina helped raise her younger siblings and worked for other families in the area, until her marriage to Clifford Vangsness on December 23, 1940. They rented farmland at Marshall, ND, until purchasing their farm in Barrie Township, southwest of Kindred, ND in 1946. Clifford died in 1999.
Jestina was an active member of West Prairie Lutheran Church serving many years in Sunday School as teacher and Superintendent. She also was active in the West Prairie Ladies Aid. Her hobby was sewing and her specialty was Quilting.
In 2003, Jestina moved to Lisbon, and in 2004 she entered Parkside Lutheran Home.
She is survived by sons Norman, Lisbon; Marlin (Vicki), Fairborn, OH; daughter Carolynn (Nelson) Helland, Lewiston, MN; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and sisters Arilene Kirsch, Dickinson, ND; and Vivian Mergenthal, Glendale, CA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, a son, a grandchild, a sister, and three brothers.
The funeral for Jestina is Friday, March 17 at 2:00pm at West Prairie Free Lutheran Church, rural Kindred, ND. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm in Fredrikson Funeral Chapel, Kindred, ND. Burial will be at the West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.
