Joan Hewitt, 92 , a resident of Carmichael, CA, for 43 years, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, in Carmichael, CA. Joan was born in Lake City, MN, to Joseph and Esther (Flynn) Mabey. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in Chemistry and Nursing. She married Robert Hewitt in 1937. During Dr. Hewitt's distinguished career in the U.S. Public Health Service, they lived in various locales, including Ellis Island, Boston, Lexington, KY, Fort Worth, TX, Phoenix, AZ, and Baltimore and Bethesda, MD. They came to Carmichael when Dr. Hewitt became Chief Deputy Director of the CA State Dept of Mental Hygiene. They were world travelers, visiting Europe, Russia, China, and South America. Joan was a nature lover, an environmentalist, a competitive bridge player (ACBL), and an active member of the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Carmichael. Joan did not suffer fools gladly. She was a lifelong Democrat and fierce defender of liberal causes. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years in 1993, one brother, Gerald, and one sister, Ruth. She is survived by a son, William (and Sandra) of New York City; daughters, Nancy (and Peter) Blomstrom of Cheshire, CT, and Kathleen Hewitt of Carmichael; granddaughters, Abigail Blomstrom of Pittsburgh, PA, and Eleanor Blomstrom of Oakland, CA; and a sister, Mary Lou ( and Bill) Smith of Renville, MN. Funeral Services will be private. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Hillsboro, ND.
