John T Schulz

John T. (Ted) Schulz, 79, died September 3, 2008. Ted was born in 1929 at Ames, Iowa. Parents were John A. and Helen L. Schulz. His initial eight grades were completed at St. Cecelia?s grade school; grades 9-12 at Ames Senior High School. He was an active participant in publishing the school news in the local Ames Tribune, forensics and dramatics. He enrolled at Iowa State University in the Fall, 1947, completing his BS degree in Zoology in 1951. He was a varsity debater for Iowa State during his sophomore-senior years. Ted also was commissioned as a 2nd Lt., Army at his commencement. Ted was called to active duty in August 1951 where he was assigned to various field artillery units. This tour of duty included a 13 month assignment in Korea with the 143rd Field Artillery Battalion. He returned to the US in June 1953 and was honorably discharged. On August 17, 1953 Ted was united in marriage to fianc?, Nancy Jo Fancher, in Ames. The onset of fall quarter at Iowa State found Ted enrolled as a graduate student in Entomology. He received his MS degree in 1955; his PhD degree in 1957. An offer to join the Department of Entomology, North Dakota State University, was accepted; Ted joined the Department as an Assistant Professor on June 1, 1957. He remained a member of that Department until his retirement in June 1992, when he stepped down from his responsibilities as Professor and Chairman. During his 35 years at NDSU he was very active in the activities of his professional society, the Entomological Society of America (ESA). He was elected to all offices including president of ESA?S North Central Branch. He also served a 3-year term on the ESA Governing Board. Ted was elected an Honorary Member of the ESA following his retirement. In 1972 the highlight of his career was while performing sunflower research, he discovered a midge named Contarinia Schulzī which is currently exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. At NDSU he was a participant in the activities of the research honorary Society of Sigma Xi, and was a faculty member chosen to receive membership in the honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. He served as faculty advisor to the Newman Club for many years. In retirement Ted has continued his service support with the Lake Agassiz Kiwanis Club. He was a SCORE volunteer for eight years. He has been a Hospice of the RRV volunteer since 2000. In addition to his wife, Ted is survived by son, Dr. David (Vivienne) Chattanooga, TN, and daughters, Mary Jo Long (Stephen), Passell, MN and Annette M. Keller (Jeffry), Andover, MN, sister Jackie Francis (David), Wyoming, OH, 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Susan Diehl and grandson, Michael Diehl.
