Joyce Tollefson

joyce tollefson
oyce Tollefson was born June 28, 1919 on a farm in Leonard Minnesota, the 8th of ten children. She died Oct 9, 2008 in Detroit Lakes Minnesota. Joyce grew up in Minneapolis, MN. In 1940 she moved to Minot ND to join the Nursing program at Trinity Hospital, and became a registered nurse. She met Glen Tollefson in Minot and they were married in 1942 and moved back to Minneapolis. While Glen was away at war in Europe, Joyce followed a life long dream becoming the 36th stewardess hired by Northwest Airlines. Being a nurse was a requirement to being a stewardess in those days. She loved to fly, but after the war gave it up to move to Fargo with Glen and start a family. In the early 1950?s Joyce and Glen moved to Dilworth and opened the Hi-Ho Tavern, where they worked together until she went back to nursing. Joyce is remembered for her many years of service at St Ansgar Hospital as head of the Obstetrics department, until her retirement in 1978. Anyone born at St Ansgar between 1958 and 1978 was welcomed warmly into this world by Joyce ?Grandma? Tollefson in her nursery rocking chair. After Joyce and Glen retired they spent many years traveling around the country visiting friends and family. They eventually settled on spending winters in St Augustine FL, and summers in Dilworth. Joyce had many dear friends in Dilworth, and always looked forward to coming home in the spring. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Richards, St Augustine, FL, and her son, Tom Tollefson and his wife Lucy Johnson of Detroit Lakes, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen Tollefson and her grandson Timothy Richards. All friends and family are invited to join in remembering this wonderful lady who touched so many lives, at a memorial service November 14th, 2:00 PM at Dilworth Lutheran Church.
