The Funeral Mass for Julius P. Schmidt will be held at 9:30 AM Monday, May 26, 2003, in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fargo, ND. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 PM in the church with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Interment will be in the St. Edward?s Catholic Cemetery at Nekoma, ND. Julius died Thursday, May 22, 2003, under the care of Hospice at the Rosewood on Broadway nursing home at the age of 84. Julius was born on April 1, 1919, near Pfeifer, KS, the oldest son of Adam and Elizabeth (Legleiter) Schmidt. He grew up on a farm near Pfeifer and attended school in the area. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps before moving to Chicago in 1941. He met Florence (Dietz) Schmidt and they were united in marriage on January 10, 1942. They moved near Nekoma shortly thereafter and began farming. In 1945, Julius began his career in the grain business in Langdon, ND, and became manager of Nekoma Farmers Elevator one year later. He joined Goldera Mills (Harvester States, Inc) in West Fargo, ND, as a grain buyer in 1954 and retired in 1981. Julius will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his quick wit and sense of humor. With his inviting demeanor, he knew no strangers. Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Florence; two sons, Larry (Barbara), Chesterfield, MO, and Roger (Kathy), Imperial, MO; one daughter, Cleo (Ron) Peterson, Fargo; three sisters, Rita (Urban), Lacrosse, KS, Dorothy (Heck), Chicago, IL, and Cleo (Warteman), Eau Claire, WI; four grandchildren, Chad Schmidt, Joel Schmidt, Kami White, and Kara Peterson; and four great grandchildren, Zachary and David Schmidt, Kamron and Karena White. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ray and Al, and sisters Gerry and Annie. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
