M. Jean Gibb

m. jean gibb
M. Jean Gibb died Friday, June 27, 2003 at Rosewood on Broadway. She was the matriarch of one of Fargo?s long established families. She was 84. Born Mary Jean Lynch on January 17, 1919 in St. Paul, Jean was the only child of Denis and Hazel McCormick Lynch. She attended St. Anthony's grade school and Fargo Central High School before moving with her family to Los Angeles after graduation in 1937. She graduated from Mount St. Mary's College in 1941, majoring in history. On May 2, 1942 she married Robert Gibb in Los Angeles, and the couple moved back to Fargo in 1947, becoming a fixture in the community's business and social life. Jean was a charter member of the Church of the Nativity in Fargo. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Always a quiet, steady companion to her gregarious husband, Jean touched the lives of countless people throughout Fargo. She and Bob traveled extensively for many years?often on trips with the Fargo Elks club?to destinations including Asia, Mexico and Europe. Jean spent her summers at the family's cottage on her beloved Pelican Lake, and in later years she developed a whole new community of friends during her winters in Arizona. Jean took great delight in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, always keeping tabs on their latest endeavors and taking them aside to express her pride. She loved playing bridge and keeping up on current events, and she had a tremendous appreciation for conversation, often regaling family and friends during their frequent gatherings at the lake and in Fargo with stories from the past. Jean will be remembered for her love of simple pleasures like family and lake living, her inveterate puttering around the house, her insatiable sweet tooth, her unshakeable belief that one can never have too much reading light, and?above all?for her quirky wit and infectious giggle. Jean is preceded in death by her husband Robert and their son, Thomas Richard. She is survived by daughters Denise Schlax (Greg), Lake Forest, IL; Jane Gibbons, Huntington Beach, CA; Kathleen Riley (Kevin), Excelsior, MN; sons Robert (Elizabeth), Gregory (Dianne), and James (Diane), all in Fargo; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
