The funeral mass for Mary Kathryn “Kay” Dean will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2003 at Church of the Holy Spirit in Fargo. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Boulger Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND. Kay passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at ManorCare Health in Fargo, at the age of 72.
Mary Kathryn Kelly was born June 25, 1930 in Hillsboro, North Dakota, the daughter of Clarence “Bud” and Estelle (Murphy) Kelly. Kay graduated from Hillsboro High School and Summa Cum Laude from the University of North Dakota. While attending UND, Kay was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and also recorded a song with the Boston Pops. Following her graduation, Kay taught music in Warren, Minnesota.
Kay was united in marriage to John S. Dean on July 9, 1956 in Hillsboro, North Dakota. They farmed near Hatton, North Dakota until retiring in 1991 and moving to Fargo. Kay worked at the Traill County Abstract Office and at Northwood Floral. She also taught private piano and voice lessons in Hatton and at home.
Kay was active in the Hatton Community Theater, several catholic churches, AA, and the Fargo Fine Arts. Along with being a 4-H Leader, Kay enjoyed cooking, baking, and entertaining family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, William Kelly, a sister, Elizabeth Kilgore, a son-in-law, Tom Stenmo, and a niece and nephew.
Kay is survived by her husband, John; three daughters, Kathryn Dean and her husband, Chuck Wolf and their daughters, Carolyn and Elise, of New York City, NY; Karen and her husband, Todd Thingelstad, and their children, Jessica, Kelly, Hannah, and Peter, of Grand Forks, ND; and Susan and her husband, Brian Rick, and their daughters, Jordan and Meagan of Florence, MT; a brother, Michael Kelly, and several nieces and nephews.
