Obituary

Mildred (Wise) Buck, 104, Fargo, died Oct. 31, 2004 at the Palliative Care Unit of MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Mildred was born near Steele, ND on Jan. 30, 1900, the eldest of five daughters born to Marian Shipley Wise and Grant Wise. She resided there until 1907, when the family moved first to Phoebus, VA and then to a farm near Poolesville, MD, about 25 miles from Washington, DC. Later her mother became ill, so the family moved first to San Antonio, TX, and then to El Reno, OK searching for a better climate for her mother?s health. She died Feb.1, 1911 from tuberculosis. A few months later the family moved to Norfolk, VA, and stayed there until 1915, when they moved back to Steele, ND.

Mildred graduated from Steele High School about 1918. She worked in the Tuttle, ND post office for 1 ? years to earn money for college. She attended the University of North Dakota for a year, after which she taught a six-month term in a rural school near Redstone, MT. The next year she returned to Tuttle and taught in a country school for a year.

On Dec. 5, 1922 she married Roy Buck. They farmed and ranched northwest of Tuttle for over 40 years. Her life was filled with the activities of a farmer and rancher?s wife of that time. She was active in the Church of the Nazarene in Tuttle. They had two children: Helen (Vernon)Youngs, and Gerald (Shirley). Gerald died in 1999. Because of Roy?s poor health they moved to Tuttle in 1963. He died Dec. 31, 1966. Following Roy?s death she remained in Tuttle. In 1970 she moved to Madison, WI to be near her daughter. In Madison she joined the United Methodist Church, and remained a member until her death. After her daughter and husband returned to Fargo in 1979, she returned also, and lived in an apartment close to them. She remained there until Oct. 24, 1999. After that she resided with her daughter and husband until her death.
