Mildred Orrine Weiss, 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 in Hugo, Minnesota. She was born July 3, 1924 in Moorhead, MN to Oscar and Gunda (Sand) Sandy. She attended Moorhead Schools and graduated high school in Long Prairie, MN.
On August 22, 1946 Mildred was united in marriage to Harvey Lester Weiss, a WWII veteran. The couple farmed in Sabin and Glyndon.
Mildred was employed as a dietary worker and then a custodian at Moorhead State University, where retired at age 70. She also worked as CNA at St. Ansgar Hospital and Eventide, Moorhead MN. For 6 years, she was a resort Owner on Rush Lake, Perham, MN. She was an extremely hard worker/laborer who would “take care of the details” and “sweep in the corners.”
She was active in the community, holding many leadership positions and could “fit in” with any crowd. Mildred was a very proud American, serving as a three-time President of the VFW Women’s Auxillary in Moorhead, MN–1982/83, 1989/90, 1994/95. Mildred was also the President of the International War Veteran’s Alliance Auxillary in 1989. Mildred was a long-time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN, serving 7 years as president of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML).
Mildred was the matriarch and loved her family. She was a proud mother and grandmother of 4 Eagle Scouts and 1 Girl Scout with Gold Award.
Mildred was always the caretaker/caregiver with a “heart of gold to help one another.” She would give the “shirt off her back,” whether it be to family, a friend, church folks, apartment neighbors, or even a stranger.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Sheppard, Fergus Falls, MN; son, Harvey (Jean) Weiss, Hugo, MN; grandsons: Wayne LePard, children, Jacob, Adam, Mason and Ben, Roseau, MN, Matthew Sheppard and children, Chantel and Sadie, Moorhead, MN; Travis (Jessica) Sheppard and children, Kyle, Bryan and Ryleigh, North Charleston, NC; Leigh (Jamie) Weiss and children, Thomas, Ciera, Tayten, Devin, Danica and Molly, Wolverton, MN; and granddaughter Elisa (Aaron) Weiss/Talus and children, Rin and Leo, Duluth, MN; and her sister-in-law, Arlene Sandy of Fargo, ND.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Lester Weiss; brothers, Curtis Sandy and Herman Sandy; niece, Christine Sandy; and granddaughter-in-law, Sara LePard.
