Obituary

Muriel Lyons of Fargo, North Dakota went home to be with the Lord on November 3, 2019 at the age of 94. Muriel Cecelia Lyons was born on April 17, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Martin and Cecelia Schoeder. Muriel graduated from high school in Minneapolis, MN and began working at Minneapolis Moline where she met Mark Lyons, the love of her life. They married on July 8, 1945 and Mark and Muriel had three children, Kathleen, Michael, and Beth. On September 2, 1958 Mark Lyons passed away suddenly. In 1962, with great strength, courage and fortitude, Muriel started a new chapter in her life and moved her family to Finley, ND where she purchased the Shamrock Inn Motel. In 1971, Muriel relocated to Jamestown, ND to work in the hotel industry, most notably the Dakota Inn where she worked for 35 years as office manager until she retired and moved to Fargo, ND to be closer to her family.

Muriel was dearly loved by her family and friends. Her tenacity, strong work ethic and ability to keep her sense of humor in the midst of adversity inspired all her family. Family was everything to her and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never met a stranger and loved showing them pictures of her family and giving them bags of candy. Muriel loved flowers, collecting teapots, hats, crocheting afghans, and photos, photos, photos of those she loved. She looked at photos on FACEBOOK every day! Shopping at Kmart and Boys Ranch was one of her favorite hobbies and most of the employees knew her by name. We loved her in life and won’t forget her in death.

Muriel is survived by her son Michael (Brenda) Lyons of Centennial, CO; her daughter, Beth (Jeff) McClean of Fargo, ND; one sister, Nancy (Pete) Lorenz of Beloit, KS; one brother, David Schoeder of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren; seventeen great -grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; her daughter, Kathleen Strand; and her two brothers, Robert and Jerry Schoeder.

Muriel’s Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren: Children of Kathleen (Doug) Strand; Kimberly (Mark) Percy of London, England, UK, and their children, Madeleine and Dexter; Laura (Dustin) Roberge of Horace, ND and their sons, Taylor and Chase: Nicole (Michael) Bangasser of Plymouth, MN and their daughters, Megan and Emily; Jennifer (Clayton) Dilly of West Fargo, ND and their daughters, Makenna and Harper; and Mark (Nicole) Strand of Grand Forks, ND and their sons, Ryan and Rory. Children of Beth (Jeff) McClean: Michelle (Frank) Taracido of Denver, CO and their children, William, Matthew, and Charlotte; and Bryan (Nikki) McClean of Moorhead, MN and their daughters, Madisyn, Kaylie, Paisley, and Piper.

The family would like to thank the staff at Villa Maria and Essentia Hospital for their kind and excellent care given to our beloved Muriel.

There will be a memorial service at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 11, 2019 at Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center, Fargo with a visitation one hour prior.

  20. Kay Reinke says:

To all of Muriel’s family, my sympathy goes out to you all. I just finished the video you put together. What a wonderful keepsake for all of you. I remember when Muriel moved to Finley. I was so impressed, a single mom moved with her kiddo’s, an unusual thing in the 60’s. It told me it was possible to move on, take an unknown business in and unknown town and thrive. Kathy became a great friend and I remember running home with her now and then. I, however thought only of the glamour, not any of the worries………that came years later as Kathy and I discussed this at one of our class gatherings. Muriel has left a legacy from those early days in Finley. I see love in every picture of the video. She forged on after the loss of her husband and much later her Kathy. What a gal, one I will always admire. She celebrates now with her hubby and Kathy. May you celebrate with her and continue the love she brought to you all. God Bless the memory of Muriel Lyons

Jeff and I send our deepest sympathy to all of you. I have always enjoyed hearing about your trips to Fargo, and about Murel’s wonderful sense of humor. May her celebration of life be filled with many more of these stories that you haven’t yet heard in addition to the ones you’ll share with others, and keep lovingly in your heart. A life well lived fittingly describes your dear mother and Brenda’s second mom. All our love and prayers to all of you!
