Nancy Marsden

Nancy passed away on Monday, September 3, 2012 at Sanford Health in Fargo at the age of 62.
Nancy McCarty was born on August 16, 1950, the daughter of Thomas and Leona (Walker) McCarty in Bismarck, ND. She grew up in Bismarck, graduating from St. Mary’s High School and University of Mary. She began her career working for Catholic Family Services in Bismarck. Nancy was united in marriage to Thomas Marsden on September 8, 1978 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Bismarck. After their marriage they made their home in Fargo where Nancy worked for Catholic Family Services. After the birth of their children, Nancy worked at home raising her family. For the past 17 years, Nancy served as Director for the Life Coalition in Fargo. She also worked as needed as a substitute teacher for the Fargo Public School System.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Thomas Marsden; her son, Patrick Marsden; and her daughter, Katie Jo Marsden – all of Fargo; her sister, Mary Jo (John) Shaffer of Bismarck; her brother, Danny (Jill) McCarty of Edina, MN; several nieces and nephews; many other very dear relatives; and longtime best friend, Mary Fransen.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Leona.

Fargo So sorry to hear about Nancy. We were PTA moms at Clara Barton and I always enjoyed visiting with Nancy at events and after school waiting for the kids. Then, later in the grocery store, getting updated on the families and current events. I wanted to let you know how Nancy touched many lives including mine. I will miss our chats. We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Nancy. She was a lovely lady and she had a big impact on our lives. When she was working at Catholic Family Services in Bismarck, she placed two of our adopted children with us. She was also a high school classmate of mine and I have fond memories of us piling into the car to get to Scotty’s drive in and back before our lunch hour was over. She will be greatly missed. I haven’t seen Nancy in some time, but I think back on her many visits with Mary over the years, to the Fransen farm at Coleharbor as well as to our parents condo in Bismarck.
She always brought life, love, and laughter with her and she brightened our lives as well as our parents lives on those visits.

I have been truly blessed to have had Nancy as one of my best friends in my life. She was a wonderful gift. I will think of her often and each time I do it will bring a smile to my face. We shared many good times over the years. She will never be forgotten!
Thank you for allowing me to spend so much time with her these last months. I will cherish all of our conversations, especially the one I shared with you at the hospital where we both actually smiled and laughed!

My childhood friend is gone! I’ll remember all of the little girl giggles we shared, the things we were told not to do by our parents and we snuck and did them anyway, screaming as the girls did those days when we saw the Beatles (her parents graciously took me along to Denver, I think for her dad’s Toastmasters convention, and Mr. McCarty got us tickets for the concert), and how she and I waited on her front porch for my dad to come home to take me to get my new puppy – all happy childhood memories. My heart aches at the loss for everyone who knew and loved her. However, we know she is filling up heaven with talk and laughter!

I knew Nancy when she was a student at Cathedral Grade School. I was her brother Danny’s first grade teacher. (At that time I was Sister Yvonne!)
When Nancy’s mother died I enjoyed a wonderful visit with Nancy. I remember Nancy as a wonderful, beautiful woman who was faithful and loving to her family, friends and clients. I know God welcomes her, this faithful servant, to eternal joy and peace. May the love you have for her deepen even with her absence and may you console one another in that same love.

I knew Nancy for only a short time and I will never forget her. She was a beautiful lady with a wonderful heart. My prayers go out to her family during this difficult time.

I got to know Nancy the past few years when she subbed for me at Kennedy Elementary in the Resource Room. Nancy always came in with a smile and a hug!

Tom, Katie and Pat, I was devastated to hear of Nancy’s passing. My heart is so full of sadness and disbelief. When I spoke with her in June, it seemed hopeful, and with her diagnosis at Mayo, even more so. I will never forget all the kindnesses she shared with my mom and our long and spirited conversations.
