Paul Hertsgaard

Paul O. Hertsgaard died on July 25, 2007 at Bethany Homes, in Fargo, ND. Paul Hertsgaard was born on September 17, 1918 in Kindred, ND to Amund and Tilda (Grant) Hertsgaard. He was educated in Kindred and continued his education at North Dakota State Agricultural College (now known as NDSU). He entered the Army in 1943 and attended Officers Candidate School and trained troops before going overseas himself in 1944. He was captured by the Germans in 1945 and spent 2 months in a POW Camp. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster for his service during the war and had the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He returned to Kindred and farming with his father and brother, Olaf. In 1953, he was called up to serve in the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he returned to his home in Kindred, where he and his brother Olaf farmed together until retirement. He married Doris Hanson at Kindred Lutheran Church on September 13, 1953. Paul and Doris moved into Kindred in 1989. Doris died in 1995. Paul moved to Bethany Homes in 2004. Paul was an active member of his church and community. He considered Kindred Lutheran his home and enjoyed welcoming others to the church. He was a member of the Kindred American Legion, serving as Commander and leader of the Color Guard, and a Lions Club member, receiving the Melvin Jones Service Award. He served on the Kindred School Board for 25 years and was a board member at Bethany Homes. Paul was actively involved in the Dollars for Scholars, and was an avid supporter of Kindred High School sports. Family always came first in his life. He is survived by his children: John Hertsgaard (Jean), Craig Hertsgaard (Karen), and Ruth Hertsgaard, all of Kindred, ND and five grandchildren: Peder Hertsgaard, Edina, MN, Tarrand Hertsgaard (fianc?, Justin Fiesel), Fargo, ND, Emma Hertsgaard, Kindred, ND, Timothy Hertsgaard, Kindred, ND and David Hertsgaard, Kindred, ND. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris; and two brothers: Thor and Olaf. Visitation: Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Fredrikson Funeral Chapel, Kindred, ND from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm followed by the Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Funeral: Sunday, July 29, at 1:00 pm at Kindred Lutheran Church. The pallbearers are Peder Hertsgaard, Tarrand Hertsgaard, Emma Hertsgaard, Timothy Hertsgaard David Hertsgaard, Steve Hanson, Gwen Howe, and Terry Hertsgaarad Ajir.
