Raymond R. Berndt, 87 of Fargo, formerly of Jamestown, ND, died Thursday, October 18, 2007 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead. Raymond was born on January 27, 1920 in Minneapolis, MN to Fred and Gertrude (Strube) Berndt. Raymond served in the US Army Air Force during WWII. He married Gertrude Maas on June 16, 1946 in Hazen, ND. Raymond received his Bachelor?s Degree from the University of North Dakota in 1948 and his Master?s Degree from Michigan University in 1949. Raymond worked on and off as a Railroad Telegrapher until receiving his Master?s Degree. He then worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker for the North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown from 1961-1966, was the assistant director of the social work department from 1966-1973 and Ombudsman from 1973-1985. He was also an assistant professor of sociology at Jamestown College for several years in the early 1960s. Raymond was a member of the American Personnel and Guidance Association, American Association of University Professors and the National Association of Social Workers. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth and sister, Loretta. Raymond is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Fargo; children, Kathleen (Kenneth) Rissmann of Byron, GA, Jonathan Berndt of Portland, OR, Susan (Kenneth) Gernhardt of Fargo; grandchildren, Tanya, Christopher, Stacy, Eric, Mark, Carey, Barry; 8 great-grandchildren and his sister, Lorraine (Lyle) Meland of Harvey, ND. Visitation: Monday, October 22 from 10-11 am at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Funeral Service: Monday at 11:00 am at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Interment: Monday at 2:30 pm at Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown with a reception following the interment at Atonement Lutheran Church in Jamestown. Arrangements entrusted to Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
