Richard “Dick” McGarvey passed away Sunday, September 21, 2014 at his home with his family by his side.

Richard William McGarvey was born in Bismarck, ND on March 4, 1924. His parents were Rose and Charles McGarvey.  He attened a one room country school through the 8th grade.  He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1942.  He attended UND for 2 years.  He worked at various jobs in ND, Washington and the oil industry in Montana, Texas and Mexico.  He was self employed in construction when he married Flora Nagel in Assumption Catholic Church in Starkweather ND on November 24, 1953.  He was employed as Manager of Jamestown Agsco, Manager of Melland Steel Buildings and spent 30 years as a salesman for Williams Steel and Hardware, retiring in 1999 at the age of 75. He was a life long Republican, serving as a delegate to the National Convention in 1992.

 He is survived by his wife Flora and children Rose (John) Skroch, Courtenay, ND, Barbara (Ronald) Larson, Alexandria, MN, David (Jodi) McGarvey, Big Lake, MN,  Mary Dissette, West Fargo, ND, Daniel (Jeanne) McGarvey, Old Orchard Beach, ME;  Eight grandchildren, Ryan (Amber) Larson, Ross (Alissa) Larson, Jessica and Peter Skroch, Nicole and Nadine Dissette, Keon McGarvey and Tyler Dronen; 2 step grandsons, Ryan (Becky) Pendleton, Daniel ( Tina) Pendleton; 3 great grandchildren  Gavin, Lydia and Haley Larson and 3 step great grandchildren Devon, Mckenzie and Zackery Pendelton.  Also survived by  siblings, Marian (Bill) Willmann, Patricia Dunbar, Patrick McGarvey, Jerry (Angie) McGarvey, Rose Mary (Richie) Chichester, Tom McGarvey, Peggi (Gene) Guilbault; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann McGarvey and Roberta McGarvey and In-laws Rosie and Dennis Wentz, Ilene Schemionek and Evelyn Nagel and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceeded in death by his daughter Elizabeth “Beth” Joan McGarvey Dronen, his parents Rose and Charles McGarvey and brothers Charles, Terrence, Ralph ad Robert McGarvey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to: Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Roger Maris Cancer Center, Hospice of the Red River, Sanford Home Care.

    My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. I have wonderful memories of Dick and his huge heart and generous spirit. He touched more lives than I think he ever realized. He will be greatly missed by many!! Cherish all the wonderful memories.

    Dick and Flora were so good to us when I was over playing with Beth as kids. And more recently when my Mom died. Dick was an incredibly kind and thoughtful man, and he will be dearly missed. Love, Stacy Gallagher
