Obituary

Robert Preble Cadwell died Friday, July 18, 2014, in Mesa, AZ. He was 88.

Bob was born August 28, 1925, in Waubay, SD, to Hazel Preble and Lloyd Lorane Cadwell.  Bob blessed his family and friends with patience, kindness, generosity, humor, a strong moral compass and vivid stories of his life.

Growing up, Bob moved with his family to Wessington Springs and Gann Valley, SD, and Hillsboro and Fargo, ND. The family operated hotels and restaurants and Bob’s father worked as a barber. Lloyd Cadwell died January 20, 1943.

At age 17, Bob convinced his mother to allow him to sign up for the Navy and he entered service in World War II in August 1943. He was stationed on the USS Yorktown.

Bob met his first wife, Ramona Dilley, in Fargo in 1945. They married June 24, 1950. Together they raised six children, sharing many adventures along the way. Bob worked as a mail carrier and over the years managed many other part-time jobs on the side. He later became Superintendent of the Mails for the Moorhead, MN, Post Office. In November 1976 he was sworn in as Postmaster for the Jamestown, ND, Post Office.  Bob also operated a small costume jewelry store called The Total Look Store. He lost Ramona to cancer in July 1992.

Bob married Sharon Sealy Lenthe on November 26, 1993, in Loveland, CO. Together the two enjoyed a 20-year marriage filled with family, friends and fun. They took bicycle trips in Europe, went on cruises and other international journeys. Until recently they split their time between homes in Loveland, CO, and Mesa, AZ, enjoying many friendships in both cities.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon, children Rob Cadwell (Jo), Paula Cadwell, Jill Larson, Tom Cadwell (Julie), Jim Cadwell (Cyndi), Cheri Cadwell, 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Helen Barsalou (Bob) and Bobbie Paradis (Steve). In addition, Bob is survived by Sharon’s children Diann Bottrell (Michael), Sue Lenthe (Doug Lindgren), Karen Jayne (David), Steve Lenthe (Toni) and six grandchildren.  Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, sons-in-law William Thompson and Curt Larson, his parents, and a brother and sister.

I am remembering the family’s involvement in Jamestown in hockey and figure skating. You were an asset to our community. I had hoped to come to the service Sat. in Fargo but I have company due to the state Legion baseball tourney here. My grandson is a coach with the Bismarck team and they play Sat. at noon and his family is staying here. I extend my sympathy to all of you. I will make a donation to Honor Flight in Bob’s memory.
I am also to extend my sympathy to you from Bill and Sue Parries as they are in Washington visiting their son.

Ramsey MnI grew up down the street from the Cadwells & Paula was my friend. When they say it took a village to raise a child the Cadwell parents were there for me. They picked me up on the way to school & baton lessons. I thank Paula & her parents for their kindness & I’ve stepped up too. My husband & I have taken many kids into our home over the years & put many miles shuttling kids in need of rides. They will never know how appreciative I was. My condolences to the Cadwell family.
