Ronald D. Mastrud, 79, Fargo passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Sanford Hospice House, Fargo.

Ronald was born April 27, 1941 to Christian and Hilda (Haskins) Mastrud in Hatton, ND. He graduated from Hatton High School before enlisting in the US Air Force. After he was honorabley discharged, he joined the North Dakota Air National Guard “Happy Hooligans” in Fargo where he was given the nickname “Spook.”

He worked full time for the state of North Dakota Air National Guard. He retired after 30 years from the Air Guard and from the State of ND in 1996 due to his disability HSP (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia). He was an active member of the Fargo American Legion, Gilbert C. Grafton Post #2.

He married Alice Hamling on July 1, 1967 at St Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo.

Ron was known for his love of animals, playing cards, Vikings Football, stock market updates and his love of western movies. He also loved chocolate milkshakes, banana cream pie, Coca Cola and Budweiser.

Ron was a quiet man of few words. He didn’t show a lot of affection, a more “tough love kind of guy” until he met his grandchildren.

His survivors include his wife Alice; six children, Lori (Tom) Bloch, Greg (Janet), Lisa (Ben) Gramer, Brenda (Steve) Lewis, Chad (Brittany), and Stacy (Tony) Rogen, and 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Corrine Anderson, Delores Smith, Shirley Hendrickson, and sister-in-law Delores Mastrud.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alvin and Myron, sisters, Gardia Gierke and Bernice Novak.

Ron’s family wants to give a very special “Thank You” to Sanford Hospice Homecare nurses – Kari and Bruce and to everyone at Sanford Hospice Hospital for their loving, caring and dedicated staff. “You are very special people.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the HSP Foundation at www.sp-foundation.org and/or a charity of your choice.

Please enjoy a milkshake in Ronald’s honor whenever you can.
