Ronald D. Mastrud, 79, Fargo passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Sanford Hospice House, Fargo. Ronald was born April 27, 1941 to Christian and Hilda (Haskins) Mastrud in Hatton, ND. He graduated from Hatton High School before enlisting in the US Air Force. After he was honorabley discharged, he joined the North Dakota Air National Guard “Happy Hooligans” in Fargo where he was given the nickname “Spook.” He worked full time for the state of North Dakota Air National Guard. He retired after 30 years from the Air Guard and from the State of ND in 1996 due to his disability HSP (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia). He was an active member of the Fargo American Legion, Gilbert C. Grafton Post #2. He married Alice Hamling on July 1, 1967 at St Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. They made their home in Fargo. Ron was known for his love of animals, playing cards, Vikings Football, stock market updates and his love of western movies. He also loved chocolate milkshakes, banana cream pie, Coca Cola and Budweiser. Ron was a quiet man of few words. He didn’t show a lot of affection, a more “tough love kind of guy” until he met his grandchildren. His survivors include his wife Alice; six children, Lori (Tom) Bloch, Greg (Janet), Lisa (Ben) Gramer, Brenda (Steve) Lewis, Chad (Brittany), and Stacy (Tony) Rogen, and 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Corrine Anderson, Delores Smith, Shirley Hendrickson, and sister-in-law Delores Mastrud. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alvin and Myron, sisters, Gardia Gierke and Bernice Novak. Ron’s family wants to give a very special “Thank You” to Sanford Hospice Homecare nurses – Kari and Bruce and to everyone at Sanford Hospice Hospital for their loving, caring and dedicated staff. “You are very special people.” In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the HSP Foundation at www.sp-foundation.org and/or a charity of your choice. Please enjoy a milkshake in Ronald’s honor whenever you can. Visitation: 5-7:00 P.M. Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Boulger Funeral Home & Celebration of Life Center, Fargo. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Alice and family, so sorry to hear that Spook has left us, you have our sympathy and condolence, now the rest of this will be addressed to him, Old buddy I know you are up there looking down and reading as I type it, having a little problem doing this as for some strange reason my eyes keep getting a little misty thinking of the cold and windy nights that we humped the mound out at the nuke storage sight, the times that you stopped in the training office for a hot cup of coffee with a big grin on your face, be seeing you in a few years, Fly High, old friend, Fly High.

  17. Alice, so sorry to hear about Spook. Dawn and I are out of town and won’t be able to attend today. I met Spook in March of 1977 when I started working at the Guard and enjoyed working with him. He loved his wife and family, often bragging about their accomplishments. He was also a passionate and knowledgeable sports fan. I wish to thank him for his Service to our State and Country. God bless his memory.

We are so very sorry we could not be there and I am even sad that we did not make ot home this past year so I never got my visit with him 😢 But I know I will be with him again one day and until then I Love You Uncle Ronnie!!!!! I know your wonderful family will take care of you, but we are available also. All that have passed since we left Fargo, Ronnie made us think about what we missed most about Fargo.
