Shelly was born December 15, 1927 in Winthrop, MN to Richard and Elsie Ellig. Shelly grew up and attended school in Winthrop, MN where he excelled at Baseball and Basketball. After Shelly graduated from Winthrop High School, he received a business degree from the Minneapolis School of Business.

In addition, Shelly also purchased the Frank McKone Cigar Company. Shelly continued to own and operate several other businesses throughout his career.

Shelly was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and his church council.

One of Shelly’s main focuses was giving back to the community. He had a special place in his heart for the youth of the future.

Over the years, Shelly has donated to many community organizations. He has been a very active supporter of NDSU Bison and many non-profit organizations.

Shelly greatly appreciated the employees at all of his companies. Shelly’s Stop-N-Go customers were always very important to him which was one of the main reasons that allowed him to donate back to his community.

Sheldon is survived by his children and grandchildren.

So sad to hear of Shelly. I went to high school with and still saw her few years after that. Her blond hair waved every day, and we remember her eyes, always sparkling with makeup. She now lays in peace, and will miss her. TAke care to the family, I don’t know you, but Shelly knew me,,just saw her maybe 3-4 years ago in Ada….my thoughts are with you at this tough time. So sorry about Shelly’s death. I babysat Shelly at the Jensen farm several times. I remember her as a beautiful spirit and that long blonde hair. She had many talents I hope she is showing those talents now above.

I worked for Shelly for about 7 years and one thing he taught me was you take pride in everything that you do and love. And working at Stop N Go I learned I loved making other people smile. I took pride in my job, because of the people I worked for and I would like to thank Shelly for that! He was a very good man that will be missed. Hoping the best for his family and everyone at the office, you will be in my prayers.

I didn’t personally know Shelly well, however I do know that I can thank him for where I am today. My mom has had years and years of her life invested in stop and go, and she worked hard and became better for it. I know that Shelly pushed her hard and it was harsh sometimes. I know that she is able to be the strong person she is now because of the trials Shelly put her through. Shelly was an excellent man and had the same impact on a lot of people. He knew how to run a business responsibly and effectively in all areas and keep not only a productive business, but a customer and employee friendly business. I as one of his employees now for a couple years have been able to witness this firsthand. All in all I wish Shelly well, I hope he can finally take time off, rest and watch over his success as it continues to grow.

.I have worked for Shelly at Carrington SNG for a few years. I have learned through him that just when I think I have reached my goal, I have just begun. If you push yourself and always give better than your best you will have no regrets. Shelly had a way of getting you to reach for more and to never undersell yourself. At one meeting he told me just that, and now I know I can be only be as good as I allow myself to be. Thank you Shelly. I will truly miss you, your strong voice, and your leadership.

He was a very generous man who will be missed by many. I am thankful for him giving me a chance years ago to work in the office with little office experience. I learned so much in the 5 years I was there. Indeed he expected a lot, but it made you into a better person in the long run.

In all the years I knew Shelly doing business with McKone and Stop N Go I always looked forward to seeing him. My youngest daughter Megan was very sad to hear about this. She got to know him from ND
SU opener games we were invited to and salmon fishing with him in Wisconsin. I’ll miss him as a friend and one of those special people you get to meet in life.

Shelly has been such a huge part of my life that I do not even know where to begin… He never let anything in the workplace just be easy, he was truly always the person to keep pushing.. he often praised my work, but never let me believe that I had perfected anything, as then I would have quit trying harder. I have worked for Shelly since 1988.. I was a young kid looking to get through school, enjoyed my job at SNG and decided to stay. I went thru marriage, the birth of my son, loss of some friends and family, personal illness, and divorce and thru it all I always had a bit of security in knowing I worked for a strong and growing company. I will miss Shelly in a lot of ways, but mostly because he kept me reaching for the stars, I always wanted his approval of my work… I will keep going forward and try every day to excel because of him. Shelly never said “you made it, you are the best” .. he always left that “you are getting closer but I know you can do more” statement with every conversation we had.
Keep watching over us Shelly… we need that push every day!
