Obituary

Shirley passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012 at Bethany on 42nd surrounded by her loving family, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Shirley Ann Kaldor was born on December 29, 1934, the daughter of Orphy and Helen (Ydstie) Kaldor in Hillsboro, ND. She grew up near Crystal, ND, and graduated from Grand Forks Central High in 1952. Shirley was united in marriage to Harold Hoesel on December 27, 1954 in Grand Forks. They made their home in Fargo for many years where she provided day care for many area families.

Shirley was very active throughout the years at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Fargo where she served on the church council, was a Sunday school teacher, was a permanent fixture in the church kitchen, was a member of the quilting group and taught bible school. She also was active in the community at the Moose Lodge in Fargo. She will be remembered for her fondness of cleaning, her desire for organization, her dedication to church and family, and the love she shared with all of the children she cared for.

Shirley is survived by her children, Bruce (Penny) Hoesel of West Fargo, ND; Kimberly (Greg) Schram of Thief River Falls, MN; Kathleen Hoesel of Rocky Hill, CT; and James Hoesel of Fargo; her seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Lila (Marvin) Mielke of Grafton, ND; and Lois (Larry) Gangnes of Argusville, ND.

I met Grandma Shirley years ago when I needed backup daycare for my son–who is now 28! She took him in like he was one of her own. I’ll never forget her kindness.

    My deepest sympathies.

Rocky Hill CTI am so sorry for your loss. While I did not know your mom, from knowing Kathy I am assured that she had to be a very special lady. She had to be to raise such a loving and kind daughter. She obviously passed her giving genes along. Even when we are expecting this life event it is always with a sadness of heart to say good bye. I hope your fond memories will lighten your grief at this difficult time and God will give you peace. Love, Julie

Boise IdahoI am sorry for your loss of Shirley. She was such a great friend to my parents, Burt and Eileen Grund. Your faith, family and friends will help get you through this time of grieving.

  10. Kathleen Hoesel says:

Rocky Hill CTMy mother was one of the most amazing people I have ever met and will probably ever meet. She spent her entire life caring for others, she never put herself first. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her life. Even after Dad died unexpectly 26 years ago she bravely carried on.

She would go out of her way to reach those who were in need. She often went without to make sure she could provide for others. I knew I could come to her no matter what the reason or circumstances. We would talk on the phone every week, not about anything special but yet I looked forward to those phone calls.

She is finally pain free and no longer suffering. She’s in heaven with Dad who has been waiting a long time for her to arrive. It was her time to go.

I loved her with all my heart and will miss her every day.
